This isn’t one of them.” (from ‘Glossary of Useful Phrases,’ in “Uncle Mike’s Guide to the Real Oregon Coast”) F Thus begins the introduction to “Uncle Mike’s Guide to the Real Oregon Coast”. The first time we read those lines we smiled. Yes, we have known for quite a while that Uncle Mike is not like the other children. For that matter, neither is Steve McLeod. Or perhaps the coastal climate just brings out their ‘dark side’. Whatever it is, they have created a volume that will make the locals giggle and the tourists keep a wary eye on those cute little sandpipers. This may well become the Bible ot Coastal Chapter of the Blain Society. Governor Tom McCall must be laughing out loud somewhere. Uncle Mike goes him one better, suggesting not that you,’ visit but don’t stay’, as Tom did; but instead that this might not be the right place for your vacation plans at all. Yes, we can hear the gnashing of teeth in the local Chambers of Commerce from here to Newport. But, we bet they will be selling the book themselves soon. So, the book is finished, it is at the printer, and as soon as we get it back we will be send you your copy, if you paid in advance; or will be happy to take your order for the limited first edition of one thousand - autographed by the author and the illustrator - for $20 per copy. It makes a great gift for those folks from New Jersey with the twelve kids who always wanted to visit you at your little cabin by the sea. Hurry - order before they call. Send checks or money orders to The Left Coast Group, Box 1222, Cannon Beach, OR 97110, and note “ Uncle Mike’s Book” on the memo line of your check. Cool, huh? And every Cub fan wonders if this will be the “next year” that we have waited for so terribly long. We still have hope us die hard Cubs fans. Go Cubbies!
