..yrtwiwiTiirrwriiiUj'- - _ COUNTER CULTURE S an d y R ea A b o u t tw o w eeks ago I had the opportunity to experience tw o vastly different perspectives o f a single situation. I have found m yself grateful for this quiet lesson ev er since then. A d ear friend w ho subscribes to the theory that cats, indeed, w alk on w ater, extended an invitation to attend a Big Deal cat show in Portland w ith him. 1 w as flattered, in that he deem ed m e worthy o f such an inv ite, and that he was w illing to spring for lunch at a C hinese restaurant w here the aisles were cram m ed w ith carts full o f God-know -w hat, and the clientele was overw helm ingly Asian. (An aside: As a T a u ru s, 1 have been know n to do alm ost anything, go alm o st anyw here - happily— for food). W e chose m ysterious things to eat, drank decent jasm ine tea, a n d aflcrw ard set o ff for the Rose G arden co m p lex to sec an expcnsiv e passle o f fuzzy guy s. W e ended up in an underground section approxim ately the size o f a SA C base, that was tilled on o n e side w ith tables full o f row upon row of cages co n tain in g one or m ore ol the required species. N ow , w e are not talking R E G U L A R old cages -- these things w ere set up w ith no less detail than stages at the M etropolitan O pera, with satin and sequined drapes pulled back to expose Lc Kitty in all his/her som nam bulant grandeur. That overw helm ing feeling o f being a 24-karat hick began to set in as 1 stared, m outh agape, at breeds that looked like they orig in ated o n S tar Trek. Exam ple: The C ornish Red. It appears to be a perfectly normal cat that has been starved nearly to death, then given a bad perm. T h e re w ere exotic Siam ese whose laces w ere so elongated that they could pass for reincarnations ol L auren Bacall. 1 w as duly im pressed w ith the array o f A b y ssin ian s, V ans, Persians, O cicats and T o n k in ese. They w ere at their best, w inning b o uquets o f ribbons, and garnering (if possible) even m ore adulation from their ow ners as the afternoon w o re on. My bum knee began to suggest sitting for a while, so I up residence in a folding chair in front of the snack bar in m id-m all (where one could discover that a sm all coke is (!) $2.00). T he ceiling drew atten tio n , by v irtue of its heavy-duty construction: It appeared capable o f supporting a small lead mine. Its lines w ere interesting enough to hold my interest fo r quite a w hile, and, in gazing back and forth at the gird ers in the w in d o w less space, I saw som ething unexpected - a little gray and brown bird flitting literally from pillar to post. 300 cats on one side of the hall and one VERY brave sparrow on the other. How V onnegut! I began to consider the cat show from that point o f view , and ev entually cam e up with the low , long-in-erupting snicker that is intrinsic to thinking along the same lines as The M aster. 7«í, Cannon Beach In Coaslcr Theater Courtyard Established 1977 Featuring Northwest, California & Imported Wines ★ ★ ★ Northwest Best Places Casual D in in g O ve rlo o k in g the nestucca H iver Collector Wines From 1875 Through Current Vintages Featuring Over 1000 Wines W ine Racks.
