Late November. Phaeton stops his
chariot at tlie end of the dusty summer's road
and picks up the grizzled hitchhiker, Old
Sol, wan and haggard from his summer's
labors. The two fly south over familiar
ground, sliadowing the paths of geese and
the great whales in their migration to the
southern hemisphere.
Their departure truncates tlie daylight.
The Dark Forces hurtle in to fill the void,
gnashing and gibbering, at the earth, sea, and
sky. Ttey gloat over their quarry, harrying
the northern lands, flagellating lull and
headland, worrying limbs of spruce, lashing
and tatooing the face of tlie earth with
relentless wind and rain
This is a season for nestling away. A
time for savory fish stews in cast-iron pots
chuckling on wood stoves. A chance to
capitulate to tlie drowse of a gray afternoon.
A season for oilskin slickers and mushroom
walks through rain-blackened stands of
young hemlock. A time tor stories.
The Boys at Bill’s Tavern sense it. When
they gather for vespeis in the dying light of a
November day, tlie air seethes with stories,
reminiscences, and general bullroar.
The rigours of summer have past. The rain
and wind sweeps coastal vagabonds
together, like dried leaves before an autumn
storm. They read the foam in their beers like
tea leaves and share their "remember
whens."
Some days are so dark that tlie line
between night and day blurs. Dreams walk
easily between sleep and waking. None of
this should surprise us. The traditions are
there. The first people on our coast gathered
together in December and January to recount
the myths. They gathered in their cedar
shelters and bridged time with their myths
and spirit-songs. Stories infuse human
experience with meaning, aid tlie darkened
stage of late November is a fitting theater.

It seems that we have decided to play
baseball for another five y ears, which is a
good thing. Now, if we would like to play it
properly, perhaps we should find someone to
be “Commissioner of Baseball”. Who, is the
question. George Bush has been mentioned,
Ted Turner and George Steinbrenner seem out
of the question, and local favorite George
Cerelli doesn’t seem to have the follow ing
necessary . Don “Popeye” Zimmer is our
personal choice. But if elected y our beloved
reverend would serve reluctantly, but
proudly. Go Cubbies!!
