That high lonesome sound which
characterizes ace guitar wizards Taj
Mahal, Ry Cooder, Tut Taylor, Mike
Auldndge, Sally Van Meter, and Jerry
Douglas lias long piqued my musical
sensibilities and sent trills deep inside
my craw. When Jerry Douglas lashes Ins
fingers and "steel" across the strings of
Ins Dobro guitar, the sweet Banshee wail
lathers me into a musical ecstasy.
Wheeeew! Sometimes I start to cry the
way it carries me off.
"I’d like to do that!," I said to myself.
"Maybe I could. I know how it sounds
really well." Humph. Well...
Two years ago I purchased a Dobro
guitar, the real tiling, a resonator guitar
developed initially by tlie Dopera
Brothers back in the 1920’s. Opening its
case is like thrusting open the lid of a
pirate's treasure chest. Inside is this
glistening silver sculpture, bedizened
with etched images and sheen. In its
navel, beneath the steel strings, lies a
round shape reminiscent of a '56
Oldsmobile "spinner" hubcap, the
chromey resonator that makes it cry like
a lost child.
From the first day I touched it,
cosseted it in my lap and tried to make it
speak, I have been transfixed. On days
of extreme frustration, when I flail away
at its strings to a cacophony of dissonant
gawps and whines, I despair. I feel as if
I've discovered a fledgling nightingale,
fallen injured from its nest, that yearns to
sing, but isn't able.
Sometimes I'll strike just one string,
graze tlie steel along tlie vibrating wire
and let it sigh. It seems disappointed in
me, sad that I'm incapable of dnving it to
those long crescendoes and arpeggios ot
Bluegrass sound tliat are its lite blood
and raison d' etre.
We have a difficult relationship, my
Dobro and I. I devote a quiet hour or so
each evening to learning its ways.
The personal discipline this requires
on my part is substantial, considering the
scant reward. But I persevere, and will
continue to do so, in perpetuity.
Once or twice, on those long dark
nights when tlie wind soughs deep in tlie
rain-blackened limbs of my spruce trees,
it sings me a brief song ot melancholy
promise, and shames me tor my lack ot
faith.

BASEBALL
Yogi said, “it’s not over til it’s
over.” Well, it’s over and Yogi’s
beloved Yankees won the World
Series, again. And the Cubs didn’t
make it to the post season, again.
Things seem to have gotten back
to normal in baseball, so we again
wait til next y ear, with that hope
that springs eternal within the
human breast. Go Cubbies!!!
