Now & Then
Hey thanks for the support for the Left
Coast Group, the checks are flowing in and
our fund raising efforts have encouraged us
that our first book might just make the
shelves of our local bookstores in time for the
‘holiday season’. And we might just
encourage this trend by letting our constant
readers in on a little more of what we are
d°Weil Uncle Mike’s Guide to the Real Oregon
Coast by Michael Burgess, with disturbing
illustrations by Steve Mcleod, is as close as it
has ever been to completion. We have a
wonderfully satirical travel guide that will
make Tom McCall giggle in his grave. Steve
has captured the dark humor graphically. We
have engaged Bill Me Conaughy to he p us
make it beautiful as a volume. Now, all we
need is enough cash to print it and delis er it
to folks that want it. We plan to print a
thousand copies, and that will cost about five
grand. We are hoping that you, will send us
S20 and trust us to send you one. lhey will
make great presents for those people you
love, but don’t want to see at Bill’s and they
will be autographed by Mike and Steve, cool,
hUfhe Left Coast Group also has some other
books in the works. The long promised trade
edition of “Wildlife on the Edge by the
humble Ms. Sally lackaff, is due to be out this
spring, again, if you will give us the money t
do it The’ Best of Uncle Mike , is ready to print.
Charles LeGuin’s first novel, “North Coast , is
written, our faithful readers have already
read two chapters in these pages. It will be
illustrated by, again, Ms. lackaff. And An
Oral Historv of Cannon Beach , edited by Prof.
Lindsey and John Buckley, if we are lucky,
will be taking form soon..
So, final pitch; if you want one of our
books, send us $20, if you want to make sure
we are able to print all of them send us
$25,000. And, well, thanks.
We plan to attend the upcoming concert at the
Chinook Casino in Lincoln City Wednesday
October 9th, featuring John 1 rudell, the
powerful Activist/Poet who was a warrior at
Wounded Knee, Bonnie Rait, who was lately
arrested along with her father, and Don
Henley, while defending the last old growth
in the Headwaters forest of Northern
California, and Jackson Browne, whose voice
has always been raised and his musii played
in the name of compassion. It costs $35 but
that is going to the Oregon Native Youth
Council. These folks have a very' good record
of making a major difference in the lives of
native American youth.
Billy,

It is my understanding that the Upper Lett
Edge will feature “politics” (with a little p)
this coming issue. The Oregon Coast Support
Group would like to remind voters and
candidates that the Indian Wars continue and
the United States government and politicians
still make promises during elections that are
never kept
Billy, I wish 1 wrote like you but alas, not.
So, I have enclosed a few quotes by Indian
People who not only say it like it is but do so
eloquently.
The Oregon Coast Support Group is having a
serious food drive to be delivered Wednesday-
Oct 2nd to Anpo “Day Break” Organization at
their Kuhn Kuni “Current Camp” at the
Tatonka Ohitika Memorial Grounds. This is
Sacred Treaty Land in the Mt. Hood National
Forest. They are in great need of food (fresh
or canned). We need to share this
information. In the Spirit.

ONU LOT EDGE OCTOBER
Speaking of books, we recently spoke to,
well..... “D”, an author. “D” stopped using his
last name years ago and got down to an initial
for his first venture in literature, and an
interesting venture it is. The book takes you
inside the mind of Jamie, a beautiful 28 year
old woman who is a coma after being hit by a
taxi cab. The reader is invited by the author
to share what he has learned about the female
mind from women he interviewed in the
writing of this small, poetic, and totally
original work. It, of course, has all the
failings of a first effort. It does seem to have
less than most, if only because it is not
calculated. The structure is simple, the
thoughts of a young woman who has no
control over her environment. Ring any
bells? We don’t find out that she is in a coma
until the end when she wakes up and finds
out that the lover she dreams of has been by
her bedside everyday, he has been in an
accident and he is dead. Well, let’s give you a
sample, she has just been told,
«.....came to see you almost every day. He d
ask ‘How’s my angel today?", then sit quiet
near your bed, or at times arrive all excited to
tell vou things that had happened that
day...even read to you....befriending the night
nurses, so they would let him in after hours,
when he was too busy to come during the day.
I remember finding him a few mornings
asleep in a chair next to v ou. And even
though flowers weren’t allowed in your room,
he’d bring them for you every time....leaving
them at the nurses station, or giving them to
the other patients. When others came to see
you, he always left...then he was the only one
coming...looking so sad most of the time, but
then you’d see him smile, just staring at you
...brought that little stereo there, along with
tapes he’d mixed ...said he knew you could
hear...then a few days ago, he left the hospital
late and while walking home, was hit by a car
and died.
Jamie just stared.
“...oh yeah, he said if you woke when he
was not here, to give you this letter....
Jamie slowly took, and held the letter dear,
knowing already what it said. 1 hen laid back,
nestled in the feathers of her wings, no
longer denying love.”
“D” will be reading at Powell’s on
Hawthorne Nov. 7th at 7:30 PM accompanied
on Cello by Morgan Ryser.
