UfttKLLTT CQhST PRODUCTIONS'PO BOXllti ChHKlON HtSCH OR. TWO • 5O3'W> M S If you’ ve seen one sunset you’ve seen one sunset. We are pretty sure, here on the Upper Left Edge of America that the sun will go down today and it will be in the west, and it the weather co-operates, we will have a sunset. Beyond that chaos theory kicks in. Recently, we had an eclipse of the moon. We stood with our backs to Haystack Rock and watched in awe.lt was like having two sunsets. Chaos, of course, began to kick in. “Rabbits running in the ditch, beatniks out to make it rich, must be the season of the witch.” Keep that it mind, as we proceed. One Sunset When our gentle readers do in tact chose to view the available sunset, we suggest that they ponder this; along with the beauts before them, look at the beach, can you see a mile north or south? Are you at that special place on this beach that you think oi as ‘yours’? Would you like to keep ‘your beach safe, and make it better? Almost the whole of the Oregon Coast has been ‘adopted’, mile by mile, by folks who love it and visit it on a regular basis. 1 hey notice changes, good and bad, and they document them. So, if someone wants to know, the condition of all but a tew miles ol the Oregon Coast, one can call up someone who sees that beach almost every day. Minimum four times a year, the mile is checked by the person who ‘adopted’ it. For instance if y ou want to know what s going on at Lincoln City you can call Ed Johann at (541)996-3232, he knows. Been there, seen that. Last time he visited his beach, he counted 45 people, one dog and a four-wheel drive pick-up. He told us of seeing a baby seal and warning folks to leave it alone, the mother was probably watching. 1 here is a lot of construction happening on his mile, and he occasionally will find debris that has been tossed over the cliff onto the beach, recently a rusty wheelbarrow. We don t encourage y ou to call him, he’s probably on the beach anyway. We encourage you to call Oregon Coast Watch, these are the folks that manage the adoption's, monitor the information and get the word out as to what’s happening on vour beach. No, this is not a Government agency, your tax dollars are not being spent on beachcombing, more is the pity , these are volunteers, over 300, who have taken a personal responsibility for ‘their’ beach. These folks get training, alter awhile, it they want, to be more able to supply information on a wider range of conditions that can el let t the well being of their mile. No, the coast has not been divided up, and some one has not adopted ‘your’ beach. Well, some one may have adopted a mile that you care about, above all others, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t. Each person that adopts a mile 'can't be there all the time, four times a year is minimum, but the maximum is impossible. No, you can’t really spend every hour ol every day staring at the sea, and neither can anyone else. Even though we might like to try. So as many people as wish can adopt a mile of any beach on the Oregon Coast. The more eyes watching the more information, that we can use to take care ol ‘our beach. And remember what is coming oil the land into ‘our’ ocean and out of the ocean onto ‘our’ beach can be very important to all of us. Give Phillip Johnson, CoastWatch Coordinator, a call at (503)238-4450. and pick vour mile. Thanks, from ’our ocean, -ed. Yes, ue remember that you told us so. We realize that it will be 182 days before Spring Training starts. Yes, we know Rhino might not be back, or Harry for that matter. The point is we will. And as we watch the Scries we will think, “wait til next y ear”! Go Cubs!! It is Octvember, coming on to Notober, and we have to decide between the Repbulicrats and the Democrans, and so.... Usually in this space we print our opinion on the various ballot measures here locally, and the Oregon, and national elections. Well, to tell the truth we are having no more lut k than our readers in figuring out the political posturing. Wc encourage you to vote for extending the Bottle Bill, against repealing the Bear baiting bill, and against the Censorship initiative, and for Elizabeth l urse, Tom Bruggere, and Ralph Nader, hut other than that we don’t really feel qualified to advise y ou. But fear not, we will not leave \ ou alone with vour ballot. No, we have a friend, and so do y ou. The Project Vote Smart folks have, for the last several elections, been giving voters free non-partisan information about what the folks we vote for have been up to, and what they stand for- can call the Voter’s Research Hotline( 1-800- 622-SMART) or consult the Vote Smart Web Yellow Pages at (http://www.vote-smart.org).
