Uev. Hulls Editoriali Now & Then August, conic it must and locally there arc several things on our plate. If our more wide spread readers will indulge us this local issue, (and they might read on because the issue might come up in your tribe ) we need to talk about the grade school. As we see the issue, it is a tact that due to the present location, and the current concern about tsunami and earthquake dangers, a number ol tolks think we should get the children out ol harms way, there by the creek. We have also been lead to understand that the facility is in need o l attention, so no matter what, money will be spent. The city’s recent purchase ol the RV Park seems to be an indication of what some of the powers that be see as a solution. We tend to agree that the city should be vigorous in securing lands that serve the residents ol the city. We could be talked into agreeing with the RV Park as the site for the grade school, and whatever. As to what happens to the current property, we have a definite opinion. But first we have asked others with an opinion to share it here, in this, more real than perfect, forum. ‘T he easy part was discovering the need and desire for a new school. The hard part will be deciding the location and usage of the school. But the most important part is to ensure quality education for the children of our community. Anita Ducber “Our children should go to school in a new, sate building in Cannon Beach. Some say the school is ok where it is. It is not. Our present school is positioned in the most vulnerable spot in town it a tsunami hits. Some say they don’t want higher property taxes for a new school. 1 don’t want my taxes to go up cither, they are already too high, but we still have to consider the safety of our kids Our taxes are the price we pay lor living in a beautiful place. Why would we do less for our children? We can’t wait for disaster to strike, after the fact is no good. As long as there is the remotest chance ol a tsunami our children and teachers are in danger every day. The old school has served many and well, it is time to build a new one. Aside from being in a danger zone, the school is in deplorable condition, sub-standard bathrooms, asbestos flooring, leaky roofs and a tiny, inefficient lunchroom. We could start out the 21st century by moving to a new school if we start right now. We don’t want the process to take 10 or 12 years. Hopefully the school board will come up with a workable solution soon. 1 know all the families with school age children are counting on them and are ready to w ork hard to make a new school a reality.” Judy Osburn Okay, so here’s what we would like to see; First, w e must remember that the school board for Clatsop County is involved in this deal and we will have to get them to agree to what every we might be able to agree on. We would like to see the school left standing for the most part, take out the portables, and sell them at low cost to locals who can figure out what to do with them. Leave the Quonset hut auditonum/gym and make it available for dances and classes and concerts in the winter, at a reasonable rental fee. The permanent class rooms and offices, should be refurbished and used by the grade school for, small classes, and as a base for field trips during the day (We can, thanks to our warning systems, evacuate a small number of students with reasonable safety and dispatch.) and possible adult classes and on going education facilities, plus provide much needed office space for community sen ice organizations. As for the play ground, this is the big one tor us, we propose that a cedar long house be built in the style of the Tillamooks who sold the whale meat to William Clark, and Sacajawea, arguably the first tourist to visit, and get skinned by the locals. Fun, huh? Seriously, the two hundredth anniversary of that event is rapidly approaching, and all along the Lewis & Clark Trail, events arc being planned. Though we are in danger of sounding like the Chamber of Commerce, we would none the less, suggest that we as a community consider the idea of a modest and by its nature temporary facility to celebrate our local connection with a paradigm shift in the life of our nation. U rrtK LETT EDGE AUGUST 11H Mo stuff, We were recently reminded that the only human beings who were always in favor of change were small children with dirty diapers. The point being, if we arc personally, and negatively, effected by the norm, change becomes attractive. On a more global level, we do understand that the nest has been fouled, and change is the only viable option. Change to what, is always the next question. The only functional answ er in the last several hundred years is written on hemp, and can be found in the Nations Capital, yeah, the Constitution & the Bill of Rights. There have been endless Amendments purposed to the Constitutions, lately, both National and State, for one specific bunch or another. We at the Edge would like to submit that perhaps we should actually try to use what we called “the system” in the sixties, rather than changing the rules before we have tried to play by them. To change “the rules” is not something one should do without serious thought, but once the obvious reveals it’s self, as in the aforementioned dirty diaper, change one must. Thus, our headline , wc assume that the results of any positive change will be, more real, than perfect. More real than what? The Navajo are very careful to make one obvious mistake in their weaving, so as to not offend the ‘gods’. The ‘gods’ being perfect ? We think not. Our headline was used to desenbe your beloved editor once, we didn’t think to deny it, or celebrate it, for that matter. Perfection has never figured in our formula. It is not an option. Reality is on the other hand, a constant. If you would ask us what we ‘believe’ in, music would come closest, but physics would be the what we mean. We don t really ‘know’ much that we can prove on a regular basis. And even quantum physics has a serious chaos factor. And, of course, reality is subjective. White House Family Values A c r o ss 2. Albert Camus jrDPPER-LEFT-E DOE-4 Advertising rates: To the editor: r. „ . Subject: The beliefs of Right-Wing Christians Born-again right-wingChristians are superstituous, and know' little about what is in the Bible, or how their Bible came into existence. Because of these shortcomings, and others, they mistakenly believe the following: 1. Their Bible is the inerrant word of God. 2 Their God is the one and only God. 3. Their God is all good, all knowing, all wise and all powerful. 4. They arc God’s chosen people, and are made in ‘H is’ image. 5. Anyone that does not worship their God w ill surely bum in Hell for all of eternity. 6. Jesus is the Son of God, and will soon return to this fiat earth in all of ‘His’ glory. 7. Women must obey their husbands, and keep silent in church. 8. If they believe in Jesus, they will automatically be forgiven for their sins. This means they can murder, rape, molest children, commit assault and battery, steal, lie, etc., and they are immediately forgiven. Man-made laws might punish them, but it doesn t matter since they are already forgiven. 9. When they die they will go to heaven (paradise), and live a perfect life forever and ever. To be classified as the one and only Supreme Being, 1 believe that such a Being would have to be the equivalent of perfection. However, the Biblical God is revealed as if ‘He’ is made in the image of the humans that believe in ‘Him’. Like ‘His’ followers the Biblical God is subject to being arrogant, self- righteous, intolerant, cruel, jealous, vindictive, tempramental, envious, capricious, murderous, untrustworthy, lying and other all too human traits. To me it is sell-evident that this God is not a real God at all, but only the invention of humans. Believers ‘want to go to heaven’, but they don t want to die. 1 think this contradiction is due to the internal struggle between their irrational belief in this God, and their rational desire for survival. If they really believed there is a heaven, they would look forward to dying. It would become a celebration. Another contradicting problem they have is that James 2:24 says that ‘works’ are also required to get to heaven; but in John 3:16 and Gal. 3:23-25 it says th a t‘faith alone’ is enough. They are then forced to ‘pick and choose’ which they want to believe. Most pick ‘faith alone’ because it is the easier path. I believe it is impossible that a God wrote or inspired a Bible that contains so many contradictions and errors. I wish our media, leaders and schools would point out to their audiences the major problems in believing in the Biblical God. Religion gets wide spread favorable publicity, but opposing opinions get almost no exposure. The search for »»..«It nillnre J.C. Sammons Portland, OR Business Card Size Ad $30.
