Now & Then
We assume our readers, with the exception of
those who actually live here, a mere 1200 of
our 6000 plus, missed a letter to the editor in
the Cannon Beach Gazette. It was from a local
lawy er. We only have one who actually lives
and practices here. Nice, huh? It seems he
was upset because a member of the planning
commission used the word “horseshit” (in the
Gazette it was “horsesh*t”) when commenting
on a proposed Eco-Tourism facility that has
been proposed on the sight of a riding stable
near Elk Creek. (Get it?) The debate about if
Eco-Tourism is an oxymoron will no doubt
continue, especially when tennis courts and
swimming pools are part of the deal. The
aforementioned barrister took umbrage, and
called for apologies, recalls,
and/or defeat at the next election.
Now, let us not assume that we at the Edge
are less than sensitive to the language used in
the public debate, or the media, but there does
come a time when strong words must be used to
express strong emotions.
We recall an occasion when a reporter from
a Vancouver paper was interviewing Bud
Clark during his first campaign for Mayor of
Portland. Mr. Clark, who had attended Reed
College, and so is not without verbal skills, and
was also a Marine, so not lacking in colorful
vocabulary, described his opponent, Frank
Ivancie, as a “Son of a Bitch”. This caused an
outcry from several quarters, but, the
description was accurate, and was never
retracted.
This paper has in the past and will in the
future continue to encourage honest dialogue.
And that includes calling 'em like you see 'em.
Everything else is, whether it offends or not,
Bullshit.
The interesting thing is that the very sight
of the proposed Eco-resort facility might be,
according to Clark’s own map, where Clark &
Saccajawea found the village where they had
whale meat for sale. (The pizza and lattes of the
early 1800’s). Clark called it “No Cost”, which
was ironic even then. The natives skinned
them. We are gratified to see support growing
for the idea of a modest reconstruction of one
of the cedar houses on the current grade
school property. Stay tuned.

cancer cell."

Pave the beach? What would Tom say? Well, it
belongs to the Hiway Department doesn’t it?
And that is what they do, pave things, don’t
they? Consider the parking alone.
We see no point in belaboring the obvious,
with examples of coastal communities that
have developed themselves into strip malls.
Cannon Beach, this fingernail crescent on
the edge of America, this ” Beach of a
Thousand Wonders”, with singing sands, this
half bowl facing the Pacific, this farthest
place reached by William Clark and
Saccajawea, where the footprints end, must
decide.
This is what we think Don Osborne was
saving when he drew what is our cover this
month in 1987..
The obvious point of our headline this
month is, “can we actually find a viable
alternative to the equivalent of paving the
beach, mowing the watershed, and all that
entails.” Is there an alternative? Can we,
given the rights of property and all, deal with
the future of our town in a rational manner;
We are hopefully curious.
LATE BREAKING STUFF
Big “O’s” front page piece, on the eve of the
summer solstice, was about the State Parks
Dept.. who are .closing 65 State Parks. The day
before, the headline was, “State plans huge
prison expansion”. State Parks get about S32
million a year,, and the plan to is spend S41
million to “begin locating land for the new
prisons”. Do they plan to put the prisons in
the parks?
Well, not suprisingly we had some folks
drop by the bookstore who, to put it mildly,
were upset. Our former Mayor, Lucielle
Houston, offered a piece from Oregon
Coastwatch that was predictably in front of the
curve. (See Call to Action Page 6). Geraldine
Rock, the Brenda Starr of Cannon Beach,
offered her wisdom and vision. We called Tim
Josi and left him a message, and he called back
(make a note voters). He was not pleased with
the whole deal and agreed the answers will not
be easy. He did encourage citizens to get
involved, adopt a beach before they pave it.
(We Republicans used to believe that if we
want less government we have to take more
responsibility.)
Oswald West and Tom McCall wisely saved the
beaches of Oregon for the people of Oregon.
We think it is time for the people of Oregon
and the people of this country to make clear
that we, the people, believe that if we have
more schools and parks we will need less
police and prisons. The things that teach us
and heal us need to be given more attention
and energy than things that protect us from
ourselves and prevent us from reaching our
potentials.

And A Cast Of Thousands!!
When the tall fellows front Chicago in
their underwear and amusing hairstyles were
being televised at the same time as our
beloved Cubs, the “man upstairs” (Harry
Carey) asked Die Hard Cub Fans to write him
a note and let the guys that buy his Buds
know we were watching. Even if you were
actually watching the Bulls/Sonics game, it
wouldn’t hurt you to drop a line to Harry and
tell him The Edge sent you (we are hoping to
get Press Passes for this). The mailing
address is not a (s>dot com dot seven sort of
thing, it’s the corner of Clark and Addison,
Chicago, Illinois, USA. Try it. Go Cubbies !!
