father, H arvey Lindsey, as a d esc e n d an t o f th e
Scottish C lan Lindsey, felt c o m fo rtab le along
this stre tc h o f th e O regon coastline. As the
velocity o f th e w ind in c re a se d a n d the angle
of the ra in p lu n g e d to w a rd level, he simply
h u n c h ed low er, p u lle d his tarn ov er his ears,
an d m oved like a g ru m b lin g lim pet over the
g ro u n d . This sp rin g , if he w ere still with us,
w ould have sent him u p th e line.

My im pression is th a t th is will p ro v e to be
o n e o f th o se springs, w ith a su m m e r to m atch.

O nshore, blue skies have a hazy cast to them ,
a c a ta ra c t ov er th e eye o f God.

c rie d last w eek w hen he le arn ed th a t Laurie
Beers h ad been selected to p a rtic ip a te in the
w o rld -fam ed Ironm an C om petition held each
O ctober on the Kona Coast of Hawaii. Each
c o m p e tito r m ust com plete in succession, and
w ithin th e a llo tte d tim e re stra in ts, th e
follow ing events: a 2.4 mile ocean swim, a 112
m ile bicycle rid e th a t tra v e rse s p a rc h in g
fields o f lava rock, an d a 26.2 mile m arath o n .
T w enty th o u s a n d p o te n tia l p a rtic ip a n ts,
in te rn a tio n a lly , vie for th e 1400 available
slots. C an n o n Beach could have no fin er
re p re s e n ta tiv e th a n Laurie Beers. Her gentle
grace, p e rse v e ra n c e , an d stre n g th of sp irit
deserv e o u r h ighest co m m en d atio n . 1 w ould
like to jo in m y fellow tow nspeople in
e x te n d in g c o n g ra tu la tio n s to her.
Last w eek I was invited to p artic ip a te in a
sm all g a th e rin g sp o n so re d by th e C annon
Beach H istorical Society. Les Ordway, G eorge
Shields, m y b ro th e r Tim, a n d I tried to fish up
m e m o rie s o f th e v a n ish in g (p e rh a p s
v a n ish e d ) d o ry fleet th a t w orked th e w aters
a d ja c e n t to C annon Beach a n d occasionally
follow ed th e salm on troll seasons as far south
as Moss la n d in g , C alifornia. Dave Pastor
v id e o -ta p e d th e p ro c e ed in g s for p o sterity .

th o se days.
