The
P ro fe sso r’s Crow
T he Professor, w hile aware ot the pitlalls ol
an th ro p o m o rp h ism , cannot avoid draw ing some
c o n clu sio n s from his personal observations ot our
n eig h b o rs in th e anim al kingdom, l or reasons too
com plex for m y th in m ind and this short piece, 1
fin d m y self stran g ely draw n in sv m pathy and spirit
to crow s. 1 know folks who, it their hom e
fu rn ish in g s a n d knick knacks give evidence, are
d u ck people, dog people, cat people, bear people, and
even cow a n d h ip p o p o tam u s people! I favor crows.
M any h a te crow s. T h a t’s their atfair. I am not an
owl.
Crow s scav enge. So do eagles and hawks. 1 ve
never been q u ite so keen on rap to r birds ot the
u p p e r air. T h eir lofty a n d aloot nature shows a
p atrician d isd a in for th in g s going on down here
closer to th e g ro u n d w here we mix our atlairs with
crows an d sparrow s. Crows seem more like us. 1 hey
indulge in petty spats a n d squabbles. They hang out
in gaggles, gossiping a n d c h a ttin g over a snack ol
pizza cru st o r a scrap o f cookie.
I w atch them co m m u te to th eir daily occupations,
traversing the sam e ro u te day after day from their
roosts in the hills. At gloam ing, they return,
ghosting th ro u g h th e pink-green a ld e r corpses in the
creek bottom , w hirling and w heeling like ashes from
a fire. They have purpose, a p attern , an occupation,
th a t has rh y th m a n d reg u la rity . They travel as a
b o d y , a D ark Clan perpetually on the h u n t and peck.
C ertain crow qualities deserve em ulation, to my
m ind. A com m on sight in wood, village, and pasture
is a crow fam ily unit, a puffy black bowling-pin
y o u n g ste r and its p a re n ts sharin g a perch for some
social tim e. They nudge and snuggle one another,
n u rtu rin g . Crows hang tough against adversity. An
external th re a t to one is a challenge to all, and they
league to g eth er in fearless courage to roust
in tru d e rs an d enem ies. Countless tim es 1 have seen
w hat Ms. Sally Lackaff refers to as a “M urder ol
Crows” band to g eth er to assail a potential enem y, a
nest robbing raccoon o r eagle. Clouds ot crows
m aterialize magically in these circum stances, draw n
from far reaches o f the crow dom ain w ithin instants.
The h aran g u in g din of h u n d red s of righteously
in d ig n a n t crows is frightening in its volum e and
intensity . Crows seem to have an airspace, a sort ot
sky territo ry . Interlopers, regardless of size or
po ten tial d a n g e r to a crow, are dealt with sum m arily.
Crows will have a go at bald eagles o r hawks, m ano a
m ano, w ith o u t hesitation. T heir courage appears
lim itless. Crows, like good M arines, rem ain at the
side o f fallen com rades. An injured crow can expect
assistance, o r a t least com passion, from his kind.
Several tim es in recen t years I’ve w atched as a crow
in terrib le stra its has been a tte n d ed by another.
Many people on th e subw ays ot New York City m ight
hope for as m uch consideration.
Crows a p p e a r able to surv ive, indeed thrive, in
this late p a rt o f th e T w entieth Century. I heir
n u m b ers, like o u r own, are like sands ol the sea.
They are tough a n d canny as individuals, yet can
live h arm o n io u sly in close proxim ity to countless
n u m b e rs o f th e ir peers. Crows (rats as well) relish
the carrion a n d ju n k food products that have become
th e m ainstay of contem porary life.
Perhaps crows have som ething to teach us. 1 can
o n ly sp eculate.
