Dev. Hults Editorial Now & Then The edge isn’t really a business, som etim es it’s barely art. We w ere touched in the darkest part of o u r tiny hearts by the response to o u r plight. You have allowed us to get back to the norm al desperate scram ble for the p rin te r’s check each m onth. We know who you are, and s ou r names are spoken at vespers, nightly, except W ednesdays, a t the old ch a p el. Deacon McCloud dropped in for services and b ro u g h t us a copy of the Oregon Historical Q uarterly (fall 1994) to let us read th e true story of the real guy w ho gave us the bottle bill. His nam e was R ichard C ham bers, he lived in Pacific City, and he h a te d tra sh . You can look it up. After reading th at we c o u ld n ’t help, going onto the M orse/Nueberger Feud, a n d the sto ry of how the Oregon Democrats re b u ilt th e p a rty in the Fifties. We realized, of co u rse th a t th is stu ff is still going on, and Oregon continues to have som e of the most unique ch aracters. T hese are a few quotes; “The plain fact is, as we should know by now, that m ost A m ericans have no great desire to be rescued from greed an d stu p id ity .” “T h ere’s only one cure for bad (political) parties, an d th at is to join them and reform them and make them good.” Howard Morgan, (Oregon Dem ocratic Party C hairm an, *52-’56) History: read it or re p e a t it. My hu sb an d an d 1 belong to a group called “The Friends o f C hapm an Point” an d have follow ed closely the John Yeon p ro p e rty acquisition. We are aw are th a t the sale started before John died and that it was done to supposedly endow p ro p erty he had in the Columbia Gorge. That property has been “g ifted ” to (I believe) the U of O, and will never be public. The th ing th a t burns me up is that it is also in the State of W ashington, so o u r lovely dunes were sacrificed totally for gain. The only good to com e o u t o f it was that the W essingers w ere able to acquire C hapm an Point. The Point was actually a p a rt of Lot #1 on the original du n e plan that Scanlon presented to the Council. We bought o u r property on Oak in the early ‘70s. My h u sb a n d Les was resid e n t engineer on the original sewer system in C annon Beach. We lived in C.B. for 2 years -- I loved it then and love it now. We feel so fortunate to have a hom e in C. B. an d hope to retire there soon. Keep up the good work. Cannon Beach needs a voice such as y ours. I u n d e rsta n d the lots on the dunes are selling for $250,000 to 1 m illion. Can you im agine w hat kind of hom es we will have on o u r dunes!???? To The Community of Cannon Beach: S incerely, M yrna G.
