Sitting in the Australian sunshine it's hard to believe that
it w ill be the holiday season in just a few short weeks!
Imagine having a beach party for Christmas dinner and
wearing cut-offs. Having spent the last month in the South
Pacific, I am returning to Cannon Beach in a few days to
winter and all the holiday season hyperbole. After
investigating foreign cultures, meeting new people and
seeing the spectacular beauty o f places sometimes
unimaginable, it is an odd transition. Listening to different
birds in the morning, watching the sun rise over the ocean
and identifying new stars amazes me. It also makes me
appreciate the beauty, familiarity and simplicity o f Oregon.
We hear a lot o f talk about the good deeds done in
December for unknown others, the big charity parties or
generous corporate contributions to groups and individuals,
but it is always the smaller, more personal gestures that
have the most meaning for me. The person who makes a
toy to donate to a child, takes an older neighbor shopping,
cuts and delivers a tree or bakes Christmas dinner for
someone unable.
The great thing is that these simple acts happen all year
long. Cannon Beach is filled with residents who spread the
Christmas Spirit daily. I f a neighbor is in need o f help our
community rallies. We have a library operated by
volunteers, an active PTO that helps generate programs and
opportunities for our children cften unheard of in small
towns; churches that help anyone, not just members; and
dozens o f volunteers groups offering services and education.
These year-round gestures truly humble me and make me
feel grateful to live in this community. To live in an area
o f magnificent beauty and a community centered around the
common good is indeed the good life.
So to all my neighbors, friends and loved ones, I wish
you the simple blessings o f this festive season. Remember
to be environmentally friendly too!
