The Sustainable Forestry Initiative of 1?96
W /iaf il Joes:
♦
Encourages sustainable forestry practices by restricting ciearcutting and chemical applications
on federal, state, and private forestlands.
W ell, the special election to replace good old Bob is
com ing up. And again we urge our Republican triends to
vote for Norma Paulus in the primary, and even the general
for that matter. Yes, partially because she is a woman, but
more importantly because ot what else she is, a moderate
w ho refuses to compromise her sense of fair play and hope
for the future of this slate and this nation. We had the
pleasure o f meeting the woman at a dinner to honor Tom
M cCall sponsored by OSP1RG. She told a story about
when she was running for the legislature, she had a mailing
list with several thousand names on it and she approached
then G overnor McCall to ask him to write an endorsement
letter for her. After he agreed, it was suggested that it would
be much more personal it he signed each letter rather than
have them stamped with his name. Tom agreed to the
tiresom e task, and then suggested that to make it even more
personal, Norma should hand address each envelope. When
she finally finished, suffering from writer's cramps, she
realized that she had just been taught a very valuable lesson
in politics, by a master. We believe her record of hard work
for the people o f Oregon stands her in good stead. Her
m ajor opposition, "G" Gordon Smith appears to be a
m illionaire who wants to suck the water from the Columbia
for his pea patch, and the hell with the Salmon. His
opinions on a woman's right to chose and his endorsement
by the O CA are just two more good reasons to reject this
good old boy wanna-be.
Speaking o f good old boys. As we celebrate Veterans
D ay, Nov. 1 1th, we might cheek out where Newt and
Buchanan decide to spend the day. One must bring up the
point that m uch has been made of the budget, and the
attem pt to balance it by The Gingrich who plans to steal
C hristm as, and the tax cut that is a major part of it. The cut
is for those w ho make over $100,000 a year, (that includes
no one who has visited our house this year) and it is public
know ledge that Congress people make $133,000 per. So
they give them selves a break o f about $6,272 each. Your
beloved editor's tax bill is scheduled to go up and his
benefits go down. Yes, he is cranky.
O kay, Prof. Lindsey is at it again. Yes, we are aware
that the folks gave Chapman Point to the State, but we are
also aware that no one could ever build there anyway, and a
quarter o f a million for PR is quickly made up when one has
19 lots topping out at six or seven figures. We share the
rage at the outrage.
It has been brought to our attention that Linda Ellerbee
will be in Portland in early November. We wish we could
be there. Ms. E has always been an inspiration to us for her
strength in the face of the weaknesses we all share. Moving
from TV to the printed word, she was kind o f the news
woman who reminded us that it could work, it wouidn t be
easy, but it could be done. She recently has written her last
column, recently recovered from cancer, recently recovered
from alcohol dependancy, and we hope has recently begun to
enjoy her life more. We know that she has helped us enjoy
ours. The Edge rarely "buys" a column - we bought Bill
Gates once, and have considered buying Dave Barry, and
'Sylvia', and William Buckley. But, we had decided that
Linda’s was the one we wanted. O f course, too late. And so
X-
it goes.
Local Stuff:
Bob Legg, gentle banjo-ist, who suffered a head-on
collision on the Young's Bay Bridge, is recovering at the
Rehabilitation Institute of Oregon in Northwest Portland
Call Janet at (503) 245-3079, she can tell you how to help.
Speaking o f the infernal combustion situation, over 7
hundred signatures were gathered to encourage the city to
close the North Exit. Several signs have been put up by the
city and by citizens to draw attention to the danger at this
intersection. Our readers all over the place face similar
problems with dangerous situations. We in Cannon Beach
can, hopefully, show them that a small group of concerned
citizens can change the world, or a small part o f it.
On the subject of Civil Disobedience, Andrea and Cheth
Rowe of the Ecola Creek Project will be appearing on cable
TV in Portland to debate the clever nimble tongued Ralph
Saperstein o f Cavenham on the spraying program they have
planned for us and our watershed. (Check local listings in
Portland for W ater Watch.) Ralph is good; he will make
you believe that Bambi will die if we don’t use 2,4-D bu i ,
as he says, it will cost two or three times as much to not
use the poisons (see the Municipal M emo, page 3), will he
let us as a community pay the difference to C avenham .
e
will do bake sales, rummage sales, etc. if that is the only
problem - we wouldn't want to see the guys lose any
money on this deal. But we have seen what DDT (when it
was legal) and its ban did in a few decades. Just because 2, -
D is legal means no more than the fact that DDT was once
♦ Accomplishes these restrictions on state and private lands by amending the Oregon Forest
Practices Act, and on federal lands by amending Oregon's non-point source water pollution
program for forestlands developed as part of the Clean Water Act.
♦
Directs the Board of Forestry to develop a list of acceptable forest practices for each forest
region which: eliminate the use of clearcuttmg and chemical herbicide and pesticide
applications, maintain or promote development of biological diversity in forest stands, an
maximize the use of labor-intensive technologies.
Clearcutting and Chemical I se in Oregon: Myth and Reality
Mvth
Realitv
Clearcuttmg is essential for regeneration of
commercially desireable tree species.
Small patch cutting, selective harvesting and other non-
clearcutting techniques are highly effective and widely
used techniques for regeneration of all commercial
species in Oregon.
Chemical herbicides and pesticides are the
only effective techniques for eliminating
unwanted vegetation and insect outbreaks.
Manual brush control, Integrated Pest Management, and
application of non-toxic herbicides and pesticides have
been proven equally or more effective
A ban on ciearcutting and chemical use will
bankrupt Oregon’s timber industry.
Hundreds of ecologically-minded foresters throughout
the state are prospering without the use of clearcutting or
chemicals.
Clearcutting and chemical use maximizes
the producüve potential of Oregon's
forestlands.
By mining soil nutrients, clearcutting and chemical use
represent a serious long-term threat to forest
productivity.
Restricting clearcuts and chemical use will
cost jobs.
Reduction of clearcutting and chemical use will create
thousands of highly skilled jobs in the expanding global
market for ecologically sustainable forest managers.

This is the month we wish happiness to our sisters. No,
this isn't some feminist holiday. Your beloved editor has
two real live sisters, who have been of great help in his
strange old life. We won't mention dates, or ages, but
suffice it to say, we arc happy to have such fine folks in our
family, even if we rarely write or even call. Maybe
Christmas, or Solstice Cards this year?!?

In other wildlife related stories, we have been asked to
