The past two months I have been staying with my
grandparents in Sunnyside, Washington. Sunnyside is 200
miles east of here in the Yakima Valley which is a big
fanning area for fruit, cattle, dairy farms and asparagus.
Even though it is not too far away, in some ways it is like a
foreign country. The weather is hot (100 degrees) and dry.
Most people are farmers or in a business related to
agriculture. The kids are into country music, pick-up trucks
and horses. Quite a change from boogie boarding and
rollerblading. The biggest difference is that Sunnyside is
54% Hispanic so the Mexican culture has a big influence on
the community.
There are lots of Mexican restaurants with real Mexican
food and there are outdoor taco stands on every comer. All
the signs are in Spanish and English. Some of the stores
are all in Spanish. You can buy all kinds of chilis, Mexican
spices and herbal medicines even in Safeway. There are also
lots of Mexican arts and crafts, Spanish video stores and
dances every weekend with Mexican music. The schools
have bi-lingual teachers and they celebrate all the Mexican

holidays as well as the American ones. It's a very different
place from Cannon Beach and I love spending my summer
there. The only bad thing is there is lots of violence and
crime there. My grandma had her car stolen from the library
in broad daylight.
I had to find new things to do there since I couldn't hang
out in town and bug the tourists. I built a set of speakers
with my uncle, worked for my grandpa on his farm, and I
took up cooking. My grandpa does most of the cooking, he
bakes pies and makes and cans jam. I got to cook dinner
quite often and made seafood fettucini for 15 people. We had
lots of company all summer so there was always a houseful
to cook for and I learned a lot. There was time for movies
and I saw most of the summer hits. Here is my opinion on
what's hot and what's not.
"Judge Dredd" was a good action movie with a few minor
imperfections. The movie has some serious points and
some funny points too. Stallone had most of the serious
acting and his co-star Rob Schneider adds the comic relief to
this motion picture. This movie takes place in the future
after North America has been turned to mostly desert and all
that's left are two mega cities. Mega City One in the area of
New York and Mega City Two in the LA area. In the future
the law system has Lawmen as judge, jury and executioner.
"Waterworld" has been labeled as the most expensive
movie of all time. It is a good movie yet there is a lot of
violence. I saw it with my uncle, aunt and their kids, one
six and one thirteen. My aunt said after the movie that she
felt she was watching a junkyark the whole movie. She said
that because the costumes were made from fishnets and stuff.
This movie also takes place in the future. It has a different
perspective on the future; the polar icecaps have melted
leaving the earth covered in water. Dry land is said to be a
myth. One little girl has a map tattooed on her back
showing how to get to dry land. The bad guys in this
movie are the Smokers, because of their habit of smoking
cigarettes. The Smokers want the girl for the map and
Kevin Costner's character has to get her back.
"Clueless" is a teenage movie that takes place in LA. It
is about a girl named Cher who is the most popular girl in
school but is a total airhead. A new girl comes to school
and it is Cher’s quest to make the girl popular. Alicia
Silverstone plays Cher. Alicia has been in Aerosmith
videos such as "Cryin", "Crazy" and "Amazing". She has
also been in the movie "The C rush'. This movie takes all
the basic rich teen stereotypes and makes a movie out of
them. They have cars, phones and credit cards. It was a
realistic movie that teenagers will like.
Summer is over and it's time for back to school. Fall is
also the best time for living at the beach - tourists go home
but the beach stays here. Go out and enjoy all the things u e
can't do in the summer like walk on the beach, sit on
Osburn's porch with a hot fudge sundae or skate at the park
without 10 million people bugging you. See you next
month.
