The Josi Report Q ev. U u lts T here com es a tim e in our lives, when we m ust take Editorial t Now & Then Along with most of the world, we here Edge were appalled, shocked and frightened by the Oklahoma City bombing. We rarely cover the "news" in these pages, but this incident is something that all Americans must speak out against. It seems a bunch of white guys who didn't get to play "war" enough as adolescents have succumbed to paranoid fears of Big Brother, and have somehow been able to justify treason and the murder of children. We have seen this coming in America for years, the kind of thinking that says we must destroy a village to save it. The kind of intolerance, fear, and plain old hate seen in the Anti-Gay initiatives of the OCA. The bombings and murders of doctors by Anti-Abortion zealots. The ongoing racial violence and discrimination against aliens, legal and otherwise. The use of religion as a litmus test of patriotism. Prayer in school, and all that. Well, you have to put up with a lot of horseshit in a free country, but 5,000 pounds is too much. There is a law in this country which states that it is illegal to plot the overthrow of the government by violent means. By non-violent means is fair; give it a shot, the Republicans managed it. If you don't like the laws, you vote for change. You don't murder children. These idiots who did this should never be allowed to draw a free breath and never be let to forget it was the future of this country that they have so hideously betrayed. Your beloved reverend is a "reverend" for two reasons: first, to tease the "true believers" — those who believe "God said it, Jesus did it, I believe it, that settles it"; and second, because he believes that compassion, hope, and a place for the spirit are necessary for all human beings, regardless of dogma. The First Amendment gives him the freedom to follow his beliefs and speak his mind. It gives him the freedom to publish his views and to criticize the government. If so inclined, he could mount a run for office, and change the laws he disagrees with. This is a nation of laws, and those laws were written to protect the people from tyranny. They work pretty Well, all things considered, better than any other country on the planet so far. So, please, folks, speak out against hate, vote against intolerance, work for peaceful resolutions of conflicts. And remember, for evil to prevail requires that good people do nothing. stock of w here we have been, w here we are, and where w e are going. It is part of the grow th experience of all hum an beings. I have experienced such a period of introspection this past year. This process has led me to a decision that I need to share w ith you. To begin with, I w ill be resigning m y seat in the H ouse of R epresentatives effective som etim e this fall. I have enjoyed the years I have served as your elected official in Salem and w ill rem em ber them fondly. My life has been enriched by the opportunity to m eet and w ork with m any of you and to have the privilege of helping som e of you through difficult times. My decision to leave is based on several considerations. The first is my fam ily; as m any of you know , I have a wife, daughter and a young son. W hen I first ran fo r this office I knew that it w ould m ean a trem endous tim e com m itm ent on m y part. Initially, being your R epresentative w as exhilarating and the tim e spent aw ay from m y fam ily w as not an issue. H ow ever, as I grow older, I find I m iss m y fam ily m ore and m ore w hile I spend extended periods aw ay from hom e cam paigning, doing constituent w ork and attending legislative sessions. Because of this I find m yself questioning my com m itm ent to the office. This is not fair to you, as you deserve som eone w ho can w holehe artedly devote them selve to the state's and to your interests. T hat is w hy I am telling you now about m y decision, so those interested in being appointed to finish m y term m ay pursue the position. The second reason I am resigning is that I have recently been offered a business opportunity in Hawaii. T he tim e is right for m e to reach out to this new career and lifestyle. My fam ily has suffered financially over the last five years w hile I have been your public servant; the enum eration one receives as a R epresentative does not replace the revenue I have given up in m y personal business w hile tending to state duties. It is im portant to take care of m y fam ily needs Also, coming up will be more about the end of the Lewis and Clark trail, and the village that later became the site of Cannon Beach. O ne of the considerations that has m ade it easier to m ake th is decision is that during the years I have served you, a m arked change has occurred in the way politics is conducted in this state, O regon has been follow ing the national trend w hereby men and w om en of m oderate beliefs and conciliatory behavior are being m arginalized in our political system . W e are rapidly dividing into polarized interest groups and political parties that have no interest in building understanding and com m on ground betw een us, but rather in dem eaning those w ho do not happen to agree w ith the goals or view s of our particular group. W e are becom ing increasingly dogm atic and rigid, less accepting and benevolent tow ards each other, the earth, and the w ell being of future generations. I am having trouble dealing w ith the building cynicism tow ards g overnm en t and politicians. I have tried to m ake a positive difference by being here in Salem , I hope that I have. N ow it is tim e for som eone else. Thank you for giving m e the honor of being your S tate R epresentative. I w ill alw ays be grateful. Tim Josi Well, as our constant readers know, the price of newsprint keeps going up and up, and two Oregon publications bit the dust last month. This W eek and The Downtowner ceased publishing in Portland. In Houston, TX, The Post, which had survived for 111 years, printed its last issue; leaving the fourth largest city in the country with one daily newspaper. We have entertained conspiracy theories in the past (and were justified), and are again suspicious of the owners of the Media. The excuse is just too good to be true: "We have to raise the price of newsprint (thus forcing many small alternative voices out of business, and silencing a lot of critics). But it’s not our fault; blame the environmentalists, who won’t let us cut down trees. (And we won't let you raise hemp, which makes the best paper there is, faster and cheaper than anything else, because you might just smoke it.)" So, the Edge, like a lot of small papers, will be forced to either reduce the number of pages or the number of copies we print, or in the best possible of all worlds we will receive tons of support from our advertisers and readers to survive this crisis; but things are kind of scary right now for all newspapers in America. 2, UÏM.R LUT E-b&L M T I1?5 Mr. Josi, Democratic Representative from Bay City, has been sending us the Josi report regularly for several years; and we regret that this is the first time we have printed it. We are reminded that you don't miss the water 'til the well runs dry. We have, for the most part, been proud of Mr. Josi's work in the legislature and the district, and his responsiveness to our problems. We wish him and his family well. And to his replacement, good luck; it will be needed. — ed r |>~UPPER-LEFT-EDGZÜ1 Editor/Publisher/Janitor: The Beloved Reverend Billy Lloyd Hults Assistant Editor/Publisher/Graphics Editor: The Humble Ms.Sally Louise Lackaff Copy Editor/Science Editor/Voice of Reason/ Indian Country/Uncle Mike/etc.: Michael Burgess Wildlife/Music Reporter at Large: Peter "Spud" Siegel Education Editor: Peter Lindsey Meanwhile in Newport: Alex LaFollette Improvisational Engineer: Dr. Karkeys Wine Expert: Jim Anderson Political Consultant: Kathleen Krushas Environmental News: Kim Bossé Movies, Food, and Music: Rob Milliron Mr. Baseball: Jeff Larson Local Colour: Ron Logan View From the Van: John Fraser June's Garden: June Kroft Major Distribution: Coyote Distribution Economics Editor: Geraldine Rock And A Cast Of Thousands!!
