My g ra n d m o th e r w as m y te a c h e r. She
w o u ld take m e on field trip s to M ultnom ah
Falls an d C row n P oint to see th e w ild flo w ers
th a t bloom ed th e re in th e spring o r w e 'd v isit
o th e r riv e rs an d stre a m s aro u n d th e P ortland
a re a w h e re fern s an d m oss and flow ers t h a t
loved w a te r g rew . If she w a s n 't fam iliar of
som e of th e p la n ts o r b ird s w e saw , she
w o u ld tak e o u t h e r sk etch pad an d d ra w
th e m in d etail to la te r re se a rc h th e ir

U n fo rtu n ately I do n o t h ave any of those
sk etch es, b u t she did leave m e w ith the
legacy to be o b se rv a n t and cu rio u s of n a tu re
an d its b ea u ty .

s p e n t w eed in g o r w atch in g th e v isitin g
hum m ingbirds zoom through th e g ard en th en
h o v e r to feed from a flo w er full of n ec tar.
My g ra n d m o th e r also ta u g h t m e m y
"savings in stin ct". H er fav o rite saying w as
"W aste not, w a n t not". I th in k she in v e n ted
th e w o rd s "To recy cle".
My g ard en sh ed som etim es doesn t h ave
room for shovels, rakes, and o th e r tools. It's
full of p ru n e d b ra n c h e s saved to hold up tall
flow ers, jars an d b ask ets of co llected seeds
c ro w d its sh elv es w ith d ried flo w ers and
w e e d s fo r a w in te r bouquet. N um erous sized
p lastic an d clay pots, w ate rin g cans, a hose I
n e v e r could coil, and tw o old ca n v as ch a irs
th a t n ee d n ew seats.

In A storia th e re used to be a S candinavian
hop an d re sta u ra n t. One w in te r day a
riend an d I sto p p ed th e re for lunch. On the
window-sill a p o t of sn o w d ro p s w e re
loom ing. The o w n e r of th e r e s ta u ra n t had
ilanted th e bulbs in a cu p of d ir t and
inclosed th em in a c le a r plastic bag tied a t
h e top w ith ribbon. The tied plastic bag
icted like a sm all greenhouse. She explained
h a t she had only slightly d am p en ed th e soil
>efore tying it shut. No m ore w a te r had
jeen added. W h a t a tr e a t to see those
lo w e rs on th a t w in te r day.

sum m ers, th e edible peas w ill pro d u ce pods
through th e su m m e r season and sw e e t peas
som etim es co n tin u e to bloom u ntil late fall.
Add com post and fertilizer to th e soil; peas
are heav y feeders. P rovide a stu rd y
su p p o rtin g trellis to tie th e pea vines
