garden because of h e r age, now enjoys the
fru its of S a ra ’s labor. By m utual agreem ent
th e fence b etw een them w a s taken dow n
and S ara has filled both y a rd s w ith th e ir
favorite flow ers.

You d o n ’t have to be an e x p e rt to
garden, ju st "Dig In," Bobbie Hord once
advised me. A nyone rem em b er Bobby? He
had a sm all g rocery sto re y e ars ago on the
c o rn e r of Van B uren an d Hemlock. A fter I
asked him w h a t flow ers g rew b e st on th e
coast, he said, "June, hav e you got an old
S p ru ce stu m p in y o u r yard? If n o t drag a
piece of driftw ood off th e beach. Buy a
p ack et o f n a stu rtiu m seeds, toss them
aro u n d th e wood, co v er them w ith som e
c h ew e d up soil from a mole hill and le t the
rain s w a te r them . N ext su m m er you will
hav e a real b each garden."
He w as r ig h t In tw o y ears th e
n a stu rtiu m s n o t only covered th e stum p
b u t had n early su rro u n d e d o u r cabin. Now
tw e n ty y ears la te r th e y have trav eled to
m y neighbors' y a rd s and even found th e
p a th to th e beach. E very su m m er I pick a
bouquet and fill a special blue vase in
honor of "Bobbie", an d rem em b er o u r
conversation and his m any stories about
"beach life". Bobby is no longer w ith us
b u t th e n astu riu m s live on and now grow
in m any o th e r yards. One of th e pleasures
of gardening, fo r m e, is to exchange seeds
an d p lan ts w ith others.

w ould hav e sounded th e alarm . "Mom,
th e re 's a th ie f in o u r garden!" He sits all
d ay on th e fro n t po rch above th e Skimmia
sh ru b and loudly claim s th e porch, th e
yard, and th e s tr e e t a re "His" territo ry .
