The season comes upon us when we are al our
most vu ln e ra b le The time o f the long n ig h ts
When from the fir s t we feared the sun s
abundance would th is lim e fa il to re tu rn So to
re enforce the life force we celebrate life and
abundance We to o u r credit eipress th is in g ift
g iv in g G ivin g to others in our lim e of fear is to
say. *1 am strong I have the bounty of the earth
and sun and 1 w ill give them away fo r 1 do not
fear that the sun w ill come back J trust 1 have
fa ith 1 believe " This was pagan custom and
later C hristian teachings on how to make it
th ro u g h the w in te r We re ca ll that the People
who lived here before we came had what they
called Potlatch The Potlatch was a ritu a l of
s h a rin g and often became com petitive We are
amused that in th is c o rn e r of the earth the new
in h a b ita n ts have been affected by the s p irit that
dwelled here previo usly We see more than usual
s h a rin g and g iv in g in th is small villa g e it is
good and shows we are open to the sp irits in the
land We also have a lot of folks who need the
help and support o f the Potlatch Artists w rite rs ,
s u rfe rs
But remember the Buddah leaches
th a t the g iv e r should be g ratefu l, and it seems
tru e When one proclaim s I am strong le a n
give", one lends to start b e lie vin g it and as a
result m ig h t |ust be able to make it to S pring
a fte r a ll So. u n lik e a lot of a lte rn a tive * voices,
we at the Edge advise you to give fo r your own
pleasure let some one else s u ffe r the g u ilt o f
re c e iv in g and give good s tu ff s tu ff you made or
w h ich is im p o rta n t to you Bon I spend money
give g ifts that are priceless Trust us you w ill
feel belter And no m atter who you give to o r in
whose name you celebrate the g iv in g lime
around February M arch at the latest the
stre n g th of the sun w ill start to re tu rn and the
g ifts w ill belong in the hearts of your frie n d s
and the g u ilt w ill be gone and the joy w ill f le i its
stre n g th And as you share yo u rse lf you are
shared and stren gth is renewed and redoubled
Can we gel an Amen somebody?
You can t eat money as the Cree say Oh of
course money buys food housing and pleasure
But make no m isuse -■ it has no real value The
real value is in the resources it buys the work
u n its it purchases from others Money in th is
c o u n try used to be backed up by a Gold Reserve
and then S ilver and o th e r resources u n til Nnon
took us o ff that standard and based our c u rre n c y
on Gross National Product So the o n ly th in g
backing up the dolla r are the m inerals real
estate fisherie s a g ric u ltu re um ber energy and
the w ork force W hich is w hy the buck don I buy
much A ll of those th in g s are ge ttin g depleted by
the ra p id ly g ro w n tn g population So grow your
garden gather the fru its o f nature that are s till
free and share yo u r time and s k ills cause a
bank balance does no good i f the store is closed
