B io g r a p h ic a l Born and brought up in Portland
OR (no zip codes at that time) and attended Kerns
Grammar School and Washington High School
there, graduating at the advanced age of 16 (Got lo
be 17 a few weeks later though )
After a year out to recoup the family finances,
went on to Reed College where graduated m 1937
with BA degree in Psychology
Started working for a livm g (or at least
spending money) as a junior in high school,
correcting papers for my teachers Kept this up
for years at first at 35</hr later raised to 40« hr
It was a living wage (barely) in those days
During and after college did all the things kids
do as temporary expedients washing dishes
waiting on a lunch counter, running a
switchboard a trifle of work for the NY A (a New
Deal program for youth ) and what is less common
learned to be an expert overall presser in a
commercial laundry
However, my life work has been in
word mongering Not surprising as my mother
was a commercial w riter ail her life specializing
in |uvenile stories articles poems for the 9~ 12 set
1 went to work for a Portland radio station
w riting copy for shows and commercials Went
from there to being an information specialist
(flack) for the Farm Security Administration
Went onto Wash DC where spent four years
w riting ad copy for an agency that specialized in
radio shows Wrote some of the shows, too
Spent summers at the beach in Gearhart from
192S on and ultimately returned here
permanently in 194M where I free lanced for a
while Then went to work for the Seaside Signal as
social editor (bridge clubs lodges weddings,
chit chat three line personals funerals and
often real news copy) Also write the bottom of
the column editorial (the one on weather, tourists,
my cat etc ) Wrote all the copy for the Vacation
News" for tourists about the beauties of Clatsop
County
Took it into my head after teaching the high
school paper kids the pnnlshop end of the
business for several years to take up leaching
Taught English and journalism for one year
during which I lost IS lb s . most of my friends all
of the temper and most of my sanity So went back
to the paper Was copy editor typesetter engraver
(a breadboard zinc etching set) and finally
darkroom lech I went with the Signal from the
days of handset headlines to the days of cold type
and elementary computers Also handled the
subscription depl and classified billing (Also
floors swept cheap ) Liked it alot as always
something new lo learn
Retired m 1977 but still do darkroom work
occasionally when needed for vacations, etc

Why I am ru n a ia g fa r ceeely commission.
Some friends twisted my arm a good deal They
pointed out that I had served two years on the
county budget committee thus had some
continuity in that area Alsu that it was my civic
duty
1 have been saying for years that it is necessary
in our form of government, for people to think
that it is oot the government They but "the
government WE This is the basts of democracy
and without this mind set it w ill not work
The county commission is a policy setting body
That is its job
or the first half of it The other
h alf ts to see that the policies are carried out This
does not mean micro managing to use a popular
buzz word But it does mean knowing what s going
on and correcting it if it isn t rig ht
Commissioners should listen to what people tell
them about what said people want Then they
should make up their minds whether the suggested
ideas are feasible meritorous. financially sound
and legal If the suggestions fail on these points
they should be discarded -• with a courteous
explanation
During my service on the budget committee. I
came up with the idea of buying up and re a rin g in
as brief a period as possible the bonds for the new
fairgrounds The notion found favor with the rest
of the committee then with the commissioners,
and was found feasible by the county legal and
financial experts Since the bonds had already
been approved by the voters their assent could be
taken as assured The scheme was approved, and
w ill save the taxpayers about SSOO DOO in interest
in the next several years
This is a hard act to follow I might never have
another idea as good But it shows some common
sense some imagination And some devotion to the
good of the taxpayers
That ts all I have to offer
