Now on to the Candidates Isn t this FUN7
Well, now things are beginning to heat up in
the various political arenas Our local campaign
for mayor, if our valley readers and the
subscribers around the country (and Australia)
w ill indulge us is a prime eiample of what
politics is all about in the 90 s We have Kirk
Anderson a local guy who has served the
community as a City Councilor, who works at a
local restaurant, drives a rusty old car and is not
the most articulate fellow you would ever want to
meet but still cares a great deal about hts town,
and his family He can be found playing soccer
with his son in the park on a regular basis He
has a confessed weakness for Apple Pie baked
with Granny Smiths he plans to spend less than
a hundred dollars of his own money on his
campaign, forcing some of his supporters to
make their own lawn signs and buttons And the
other fellow. Ron Crowe owns a business that is
in another town and plans to spend a thousand
dollars on his campaign, with professionally
made lawn signs and buttons, and has trouble
spelling environm ent ’ Do you detect a bias on
the part of your beloved editor7 Well maybe
Rut as we all recall Rev Hulls is a Republican
and does in fact believe in the free enterprise
system He is a business owner And he has the
humble Ms Sally to proof read his copy so he
doesn t misspell Dumbocrat And here in Cannon
Beach we w ill be seeing each other every day or
so whether we have a K irk or Ron sign in our
window or on our lawn no matter who wins life
w ill go on We have heard from various folks
who support Ron because he w ill try to make a
better environm ent for business in town and
reduce the regulations that we labor under And
the folks who support Kirk are concerned that if
we don t control our growth we w ill end up with
a town that no one wants to live in
So. who do we endorse7 We endorse almost any
citizen who has the Moxie to put their name on
the ballot and submit themselves to what it takes
to serve their community Given the options of
Ron or Kirk we choose in this particular
instance K ir k A n d araan We feel that Kirk is
doing what he is doing for all the rig h t reasons,
he lives and works in Cannon Beach everyday,
he has experience with the City Council and is
w illing nonetheless to serve as Mayor We
think that Ron w ill gain experience from this
campaign and. if his wallet holds out he might
run for office again but if he does we would
recommend that he examine his motives In his
statement in the Gazelle and at the Candidate s
Ta escape c r itic is m — 4a B a th in g . say
n o th in g , ha B a th in g E lb e rt H ah h ard
Forum he said he wanted to represent (he
majority of Cannon Beach which he apparently
fell was being manipulated by a vocal minority
We sincerely think that he has made an error in
the way that he counted You see. voles are
counted equally The property owner s vote or
the business owners vote is not worth any more
than the young woman who works for minimum
wage and tips in the local restaurant And we
feel that she and we w ill be belter represented
by M r Anderson So No big surprise after all
We would also like to take this opportunity to
thank F ra n k L iU le and L a a r a l Heed who are
running unopposed for City Council for their
willingness to serve the community We are
constantly amazed at the quality of people who
w ill sacrifice their time for this community We
are truly blessed
Now moving outward to the County wide races
of Commission we have some recommendations
here as well First Cannon Beach s own H elen
W estbreek is running for County Commission
for D is tr ic t 3 We have found Helen to be
honest dependable and easy to work with Traits
sorely needed and currently lacking on the
Commission We recently had the opportunity to
hear Helen speak of her desire to serve the
people of Clatsop County and were impressed
Her opponent offers little but his experience of
being appointed to the commision and being
largely responsible for its destruction D is tric t

seven candidates to chose from and we
recommend David Am brose In a crowded and

*|u s t read her bio in this issue Now the most
important county vote D is tr ic t I has a stealth
candidate who equates the job of County
Commissioner with being a referee at a
basketball game Please In the voter s pamphlet
he makes no mention of his long association the
the OCA hts stand on a rig ht to chose etc Even
though she has withdrawn from the race we
recommend that you vote for L e s lie S h ep ard
rumor has it if she wins she w ill serve
One person that we on the Edge have reason to
be proud of is Rap E lisab eth F ares whom we
predict w ill become one of the historic voices to
come out of Oregon She is engaged in a battle
with a half Witt who is an example of what is
wrong with the Republican party these days He
called Ms Furse an extremist and then brought
in the well known moderate Pat (the Pit Bull)
Buchanan to support hts views Vote for Furse
you w ill be proud to tell your children you voted
for her and with luck they w ill be able to do the
same She has been endorsed by The Oregonian,
the Daily Astorian Georgie Packwood (Ex of the
Senator of the same name but still a Republican)
and Audrey McCall (the widow of our beloved
former Republican Governor), plus many others
we proudly add our small voice
Dr K is happily going to be our new
Governor we wish him well, and hope we have
seen the last of M r Smith who went to
Washington and did nothing for Oregon
Now to the rest of the ticket, well, it hurts the
beloved reverend to admit it. but we Republicans
have again offered a field of cranky middle aged
while men so vole for the Democrats and hope
for the best
w ill demonstrate them soundly as mayor of our
community
Make a vole for continuity Make a vote for a
long time member of our community - I urge
you to vote for Kirk Anderson
I heartily endorse Helen Westbrook for County
Commission representing district five lam
tempted to address the past performance of the
Commission as a strong indication that change is
needed Rather than detail that - I w ill address
the past performance and current strengths of
Helen Westbrook
I have worked with Helen on several
community projects, including the Cannon
Beach Energy Conservation Protect Her
leadership skills are both person and task
oriented I have seen her masterfully negotiate
through difficult issues and heated debate I
have benefited from her developed planning
practices Certainly Helen has a get it done
reputation When Helen says she w ill do
something — it gets done
I have observed Helen s practice of doing her
homework before she expresses her opinion
She has a passion for detail and a keen capacity
to wade through complex issues and make sense
of them
Helen Westbrook s interest in the life and
vitality of her community is expressed through
many public service venues
she s even been a
regular volunteer for the Tri City Spay and
Neuter T h rift Shop1 Her willingness to run and
carry the tough assignment of being a county
commissioner is backed up by the qualities
required to perform the job well
1 urge folks in Clatsop County to vole for a
refreshing change This is not simply change
for the sake of something different -- I believe
Helen represents a style of operating that Clatsop
County needs

To the Editor
I strongly endorse Kirk Anderson for mayor of
Cannon Beach I encourage residents of Cannon
Beach to do the same
Kirk has been actively working to maintain
and improve the quality of life in Cannon Beach
for many years Among other activities he was a
member of Parks and Community Services and
four years ago this community elected him to
serve on City Council
As an elected official running for another post
in the city — his past actions come under fire
and are certainly part of the consideration of his
qualification to be our mayor I am the first to
admit that I have not always agreed with the
decisions which Kirk has made Rut I respect the
manner in which he has conducted himself as a
council member
Kirk has a laid back, casual style He s not
slick Oiite frankly, he s really not out to
impress people He does his homework" and
comes to decisions which are informed When he
has the choice between talking a lot and talking
a little -- he talks little Kirk is not a politician"
in that sense He is a community member trying
to make a difference here where he makes his
home with wife and son
I believe that Kirk is respectful toward the
individuals with whom he works and serves
While issues are certainly an integral portion of
an election debate - it must be noted that the
mayor serves as a vital member of a functioning
team This position requires a solid individual
with listening skills and a judicious manner
This position requires someone who w ill not call
undue attention to himself simply because of the
position he holds Calm Attentive Cooperative
leadership skill These are all qualities I have
seen Ktrk Anderson demonstrate and believe he
