Speaking of Cannon Reach's Environmental Programs,

K,m Etosse offers this list of the accomplishments that
we are ju stly proud of and would like our guests from
around the world to take home and discuss with the
folks In their hometowns
The program was begun in 19 7 5 by a group of
volunteers who continued the development end

requested that the City administer it

The following accomplishments have plered the City of
Cannon Beach in the forefront of the conservation
movement These achievements have been reached by
members of the community, civic groups, businesses
and municipal involvement In itia lly many of the
proiects were begun by volunteers and after successful
implementation and operation of these projects, the
responsibility to administer them was assumed by the
City W hile there are many more conservation
projects and recycling behaviors that could be
addressed, let's pause and reflect on our good efforts to
date

The Don Thompson Memorial Wastewater Treatment
Plant recently won the 19 9 4 Regional Award of
Excellence from the Environmental Protection Agency
The system utilizes a umgue natural environment to
treat sewage organically Once water is cleansed it Is
returned to the municipal watershed system A free
tour of the treatment plant is available through the

Recycling Specialist, continued to develop partnerships
between civic, business and individual interests, end
made a commitment to continue ongoing components of
the program, as well as develop new projects Recently
the City was awarded the 1 9 9 4 Recyclers of the Year
Award for Education & Promotion by the Association of
Oregon Pec yclers The City currently accepts and
recycles the following products glass, newsprint,
greyboard, cardboard, phone books, magazines, tin and
aluminum

In May of 19 0 9 a lengthy grass roots movement by
residents of Cannon Beach, Mary Anne Radmacher-
Hershey and Carol Ann Heikki la addressed a
congressional hearing regarding off-shore oil drilling
They were helpful In persuading the government to
abandon the impli mentation of off-shore oil d rillin g in
Oregon Thia issue was the catalyst for the formation of
the Energy Conservation Task Force

T he task force was begun on Jul y 19 0 9 and was
successful in organizing the community at large to
work together to accomplish numerous conservation
issues

In 1991 the Energy Committee was established as a
standing working committee within the municipal
government, making us one of the few cities in Oregon
to designate a committee to work on conservation
issues

In the first year the city assumed responsibility for
the recycling program, the volume of recycled
materials doubled Each year thereafter the volume has

help reduce the use of private vehicles, perking
congestion, gas consumption, and accomodate residents
who need transportation services The shuffle has
continually increased its ridership

Eight City Public Work vehicles, including the new
dump truck and the shuttle van, use natural gas
Hatural gas is considered one of the cleaner burning
fuels The cost of the fuel and electricity used for the
compressors to fuel the vehicles Is 1Z3 to 1 / 2 less
then gasoline

In 1 99? Cannon Beach was one of the participating
cities in the largest single pickup of hazardous
materials ever by the Department of Environmental
Quality The DEO recently awarded another grant to
Clatsop County to held a collection day for household
hazardous waste pickup next spring
