of water safety on our beaches
Cannon Eleach and Seaside boast lonq standing and
well - sustained programs of s u rf lifesaving, stretching
back to the gears following the tu rn of the century
We are
distinguished by the only beach lifequard programs north of
Stinson Beach, C alifornia
Carly crews on our beaches
consisted of United States Lifesaving Service, Coast Guard
and Volunteer operations
These groups received scant
renum eration for their services and often depended upon
donations from community members
In Cannon Beach. Del no R *Mec* McCoy used his position
as chief constable and fire marshall to catalyze citizen
concern and organize lifeguard activities in the 4 0 s, 5 0 'a ,
and 6 0 s
In Gearhart and Seaside Pa,ph and Betty Davis
laid the foundations for Seaside s beach safety proqram
Both communities recognize the essential services provided
by the lifesaving programs and allot funds for the
operations
Since the late sixties, local support for the

Recently, the state funding, which has helped pay for part

of the lifesaving equipment and wages, was cancelled as a

Hundreds of people owe th e ir lives to the men and women
patrollinq our beaches
Life expectancy is short m the

Rip currents flowing from shore are

trade
In this shifting m llleu , our lifeguards ply th e ir
It is a trade necessitating considerable knowledge of
conditions, constant vigilance and continual training
Preventative measures have always characterized a
prudent lifequerding program Educating the public to
potential dangers in the aquatic environm ent, encouraging
good swimming practices, and promoting safety awareness
on the beach are p rio ritie s The firs t line of defense
against drowning is the a le rt guard, ranging along the dry
send, w ith a cautionary word for fhose headed into potential
trouble
Despite our lifeguards best efforts at educating the
public, the dreme of pulling somebody from the s u rf is
periodically played out Waders and swimmers w ill find
themselves held in the fearsome cauldron of c u rren ts,
crashing s u rf and cold water
Then the lifesaving crews
engage in the dicey enterprise of re triev in g panicky
swim m ers end returning them safely to shore
Even under
the best conditions, the rigors of a swimming rescue put a
lifeguard at considerable risk
The process requires
team work, d e e r thinking and confidence ,n one s train in g ,
body and equipment
We are doubly fortunate
Not only are the local surf
rescue crews and equipment of a high o rd e r, but the
medical response for any emergency ,s fas, and excellent
Both Cannon Beach and Seaside operate superb volunteer
fir e departments Their presence is essentia, in the
treatm ent of any medical complications resulting from a
water emergency
