July the month of Independence Day and Bastille Day
( July U lh i bid you know that the Key to the Bastille is in
America7 The French gave it to Thomas Jefferson when
he was ambassador to France Americans were pretty
eictied about the French Revolution when it was going
on there were rallies with guillotines and effigies of
Marte Aniionetie John Marshall the first Supreme Court
Chief Justice was not too happy about a bunch of mobs in
America supporting mob rule in France we were a young
nation and just eipenm entm g with freedom Liberty
Equality and Fraternity were nice thoughts but weren l
really spelled out in our constitution ( White male land
owners were the only people allowed to vole )
This month we welcome the humble Ms Sally home
from the wilds of France with a full sketch pad Mar &
Rory take us to Jolly Olde England for the first of a three
part series We conclude the Bill Clunie short story We
take off for the Country Fair And the hits |ust keep
coming
We are pleased to announce (he much awaited
growth of the Edge1 Yes1 We are going to TWENTY pages
in August"1 Thanks to the Coast Range Association we will
be including a four page insert on issues relaud to the
coast range in both the August and September issues If
any of our advertisers would like to support this effort
with an upgraded ad or a new ad it will help preserve the
Coast Range Association s limited budget
Never watch Ulevision while you are depressed advice
from your beloved rev The Professor would say that
sentence could be shortened to three words but we
believe that television like any drug can be used with
relative safety if you monitor the dosage very carefully
Your beloved rev has a smalt black and white in his
bedroom and a old lube color in the living room It is the
black and white that watches the Cubs and the news both
somewhat depressing in themselves
Rhino Quits1 We couldn t believe it but we could
understand that to some people the game is more
important than the money personal dignity improves
your quality of life more than a few e ilra million Being
Republican we do not celebrate our poverty or disparage
the good fortunes of others but there ofUn comes a lime
when the money owns the person
This brings us strangely to health care On
M cneil/Lehrer ( 7) they did a piece called Who speaks for
the Doctors about the AMA and attitudes among the
Medical community about Health Care We were struck by
a young Emergency Room Doctor who supports the
Canadian Style system He said the situation is now that he
has to ask Who s your regular Doctor7 What is the
name of your insurance Co 7" "What hospital do you
belong at and how can I get you there7 and to himself
How am I going to get paid for the work I m doing h ere7
Instead of. Where does it h u rt7 and How can I help
you7” Which brings us again strangely to a piece on
Nurses in Nam The price they are still paying physically
(agent Orange does nasty things to babies) mentally and
socially makes one think we are going to need a bigger
wall in Washington DC
And finally the television was turned off when one
more Sports Hero went down and the media cannibals
devoured one of their own When it comes to the
Entertainment industry to quote Her Maiesty Oueen
Victoria We are not amused "
Dear Edge
On Thursday June 2nd the lovely pink tressed
porcelain complected Sarah Miscue Our Lady of the
l attes and companion to labradors Mayu and I took a
nasty fall from the Broadway Bridge, which spans the
Willamette River thereby in cu rrin g greatly
discomforting damage mildly insightful wisdom and
dauntmgly gargantuan expense

established in her name at all branches of the Bank of
Astoria Also an Art Auction benefit is scheduled for

'Surgeon General s Warning Cigarette smoke
contains Carbon Monoxide " Will anyone dispute
the fact that Auto exhaust contains Carbon
Monoxide7 Will anyone dispute that though 25« of
adults smoke, 991 drive cars7 Will anyone dispute
that a gallon of gasoline produces more Carbon
Monoxide than a carton of cigarettes when burned?
No one we know of has locked themselves in a
garage and started smoking cigarettes in an
attempt to commit suicide (Tes, we are killing
ourselves, we just aren't in as big a hurry as
everyone else ) So, if everyone is so concerned
about our health, let's see some labels on the
trunks of cars, and some higher taxes on gasoline,
before we consider a new era of prohibition If we
can have absolute information on dosage of
nicotine, additives, and health risks, if we can have,
as others have called for, a ban on the advertising
of tobacco (and you can add alcohol), if we can
eliminate the subsidies we pay the legal drug
industry with taxpayers money, if we can as a
society encourage a healthy lifestyle, but also
tolerate the weaknesses of our members, and not
throw anyone in jail in the meantime, we have a
good chance of eliminating a lot of problems we
now face Then we can get down to concentrating
on the damned infernal combustion engine before
it is too late
On occasion business is a litt le slow in
the bookstore and we get a lit t le s illy we
recently found evidence of this when a
gentleman pointed out that we had priced
"The Songwriters Market" at " $3 50 or it
could be yours for a song" He chose the
la tte r price and allowed as how since the
beloved reverend s voice is not capable of

The Oregon Coast Music Festival m Coos Bay/North Bend is
scheduled for July IS 30 with performances by a wide
range of musical talent Call <503)267-0938 for more
information
Can there be any doubt that 1994 is not only the
25th anniversary of the fair but also the year of
the Angel Camote s return Surely we must
celebrate the Festival of the Angel Camote by
decorating the outhouses at the fair so the angel
w ill feel welcome Some want to build and
decorate outhouses (fun houses, in vaudevillian
style) to present as gifts to the fair Others want to
adopt an outhouse to decorate for the return (these
should be wiped clean after the fair) I t was Rudy
who solved the mystery of the angel s name
"Camote" in Espanol is potato Therefore, every
outhouse should have a potato w ith wings and an
angelic face carrying something that has the scent
of ambrosia Can you create a fe w 7 Some believe
there should be Christmas tree decorations for the
santacans, some believe the potatoes should have
little hats and beards or crystals
whatever your
belief please contribute as much as appreciation,
creativity, time and energy w ill allow Everyone is
welcome to contribute to this intimate g ift to the
fair and the people who pass throughout
There are many mysteries surrounding the firs t
sighting of the angel Camote that glorious day
years ago The woman who related the story
kindly gave up her place in line 25 times, but only
2 stories were told Were any of you next to her in
line 25 years ago to witness any of the other
instances m which she let some worthy person go
firs t7 If so please send your story (or any
questions regarding the Festival of the Angel
Camote) to Dim itri Karamozov or Vous du
Caniveaux c/o The Camote Committee, 5^49 44th
Ave SW, Seattle, Washington 961
It is the fervent hope that all eye witness
accounts of the 23 acts of kindness wii! be related
prior to the fair in order that the full story can be
told m every outhouse
(Camote is pronounced Ca mo tay )
