Jim and I slogged the sands at
Cannon Beach regular ly in the ear ly 6 0 s running
bar efool, occasioning stares and odd comments fr om
passersby
away
We were oddities Jogging was a decade
No N ike, Reebok, or Adidas companies yet
produced running shoes Our e a rly running peeked one
s till August morning at low tide, when Jim and I ran
from Elk Creek to Arch Cape and berk barefoofed--a
distance of about 14 m iles
Our feet were sandpapered
ra w , but our s p irits snared
Drafted in 1 9 6 9 , 1 attended Officer Candidate School
at Fort S ill, home of the field a r tille r y
Rigid and
disciplined, the school ran a West Point pro g ram ,
grinding its candidates dnwn to nubs physically and
m entally Dem erits and the "honor system" cut the
tro ll down to size Lower classmen ( "maggots")
competed In the m ile ru n w hile upper classmen jeered
and needled from the sidelines My firs t m ile tim e was

purposes of harassment, forcing me t o r e - r u n the
distance two hours later
I laced off a 5 2 3 m ile under
