residents of lw har, ( about 125 of them then) and
was intim ately acquainted with the surrounding area

were scattered about the woo east of that point where
the Neacnx ie r iver enters L title Peach
Alsoobser vabIf were many sunken indications
mark ing gr aves, some of which had been excavated over
the years In addition to bones. I found stone
implements and other artifacts Many of these items
had been found by and were to be seen in the houses of
Gearhart residents
In those d<M ( p a rticu la rly the 1930 s) the site was
uninhabited heavily fore',ted and reached by w old
Indian tra il the, ran north and south along the east bank
of the riv e r The gravesite was not overgrown w ith
salat as it is now. it was an open grassy area,
eminentty suitable for a campsite or village Dense
flocks o, wild pigeons fille d the trees in the area
Second, as evidence that the area was an established
Indian campsite or village, I saw several deposits of
razor clam shells, one of which was over two feet thick
these deposits had been exposed one year by winter -
storm water action and were located in the riv e r b o k
adjacent to the site
To conclude I am ready and available to testify in

I can bring contemporary corroborating witnesses who
can testify in their own rig h t to the tru th o, the matter

In response to your request tor public comments on

Your interest in « q u ir ing sizable por, ions of tta
1 Jr«jtxi cons' was revealed to me indirectly at a meeting
of some ten or more pewple, m yself. and chaired by Mr
John Mellott of tta Oregon Department of A griculture
Mr Mellott stated ta was under continuous and
extreme pressure from you to reclaim or take back all
tf/Mer beds on the Oregon coast not in current
pr oduct ion
Mellott s refusal to gr ant any new oyster claims
rajnrdless of their mer it or meeting state statutes is
another indication of vour intimidation of a state
administrator
P lease bark off from .John Mel lot’ You don , need
