Enlightened Holidays As I w rite , the world hastily prepares tor Christmas Nightly the world sparkles w ith density in colored lights I think about the lights, I think about the energy it takes to light the world at Christmas tim e, about the dams and the fate of our latest s a c rific ia l larnb. the salmon l also think about the nuclear-generated e le c tric ity world wide which presents problems so atrocious and immense it seems unfathomable to me that such plants are allowed to cont inue to operate If I could have my Christmas wish i would wish that every nuclear power plant in the world was ordered to shut down immediately The pending doom they represent makes them too expensive to meter It s tim e to admit that the nuclear dream of yesteryear has become a pre ,ent and future nightmare, it s tim e to take a safe sane approach to meeting our power needs A large packet of legal papers before me serves as a reminder of the rate increase the PUC seerns eager to grant Portland General Electric for not only the decommissioning of Trojan, but for the shortsighted investment in the monster l feel frustrated that we are forced to share not only the f inancial burden of a bad idea but the risk we as a community endured w hile it operated, and the unsettled feeling of knowing that Trojan s gene-altering deadly toxic waste continues to liv e I hate to admit it but I love the pretty colored lights of the holiday season I hate to admit it but I was almost as excited as my five year old nephews when we spotted the fir s t house i • ksgtvIng evening I feel gu ilty that I delight in this frivolous tra d itio n iv e struggled w ith the decision as to whether or not hang colored lights in my home Would I be paying homage to the large u tilitie s , or satisfying the part of me that enjoys the tw inkly sparkle? I gave in to desire and have ru le d in favor of just enough Christmas lights to add a STOP lit t le color around here I ve sent in my rebate for three compact florescent Iightbulbs. and anticipate the pleasure of awarding these jewels to rny energy ac tiv is t fr lends I ve saved one for my home hoping to offset the energy consumption for the visual indulgence i ve chosen The best part of it all is that Portland General Electric is footing the b ill on these g ifts In the meantime. lm assisting the Oregon Conservancy Foundation in ge’ tmg the word out about a week of solar workshops to be held January 1 0 th - 16th Johnny Weiss, Director of Solar Energy international of Carbondale.
