"f llhor lend, follow , or gn, out of the way’
When we firs t heard the phrase it was a call to
revolution, we thought As we have mellowed a b it. we
think it is per haps more of a call to responsibility We
believe that those who can lead, who have a passion that
burns bright, must take the reponsibihty of carrying
the torch, so that those who follow can see the light and
leernthewety And if you don t think the path is for
/ou. at least (ton , tr y to stop others from following
their own road, get out of the wa/
Too many of us who iiave a passion tend »0. out of
fear , follow rather than lead We let other s tell us
what is and what isn t what we want We know they are
wrong, but it is easier to gn along ,0 get along, and it is
d iffic u lt to point a new dir ection
But. being a follower is also a responsibility, we
must erxouragfi good people w ith good idsas to lend We
must express our support w ith our energy, our money,
our votes When we n
we push leaders ahead, and
they p ull us along And we all get there together
And what about getting out of the way? Are we
recnmmending you crawl in a hole and practice your
apathy? No, hardEy But perhaps the hardest thing we
do as social beings 15 keep our mouths shut and our eyes
open ( We know it is very d iffic u lt, personally )
What we bel leve is r igh, is what is r ight for us T he
way we do things, the way we think But that dorsn t
make it rig h t for other people And we must let others
t r y to find their own way, and not try to make their
dreams ft, our prejudices Of oour se, if we believe the
direction is wrong then we must become a leader . or a
follower of a different leader But, standing in
someone sway, without a direction of our own. is not
quite fa ir And standing in the way of danger is not
c^jite smart Oetting out of the way is often the wises,
move When we find ourselves becoming par, of the
problem rather than the solution, we should ge, ou, of
the way For example, Sen Pack wood should, we
believe, ge, ou, of the way
We are reminded of Ex-Mayor BudClark of
Portland, when nine yeers ago a, Chr is,mas. he made
the decision to run for public office Bud had never run
for anything before, and Incumban, Mayor Frank
Ivancie was considered unbeatable by every politician
in the c ity No one would enter the race against him
Bud pleaded w ith several exper lencad professional
politicians to come to the defense of the city he loves,
and rid it of a man he could not abide politically,
m o ra lly . or personally (Bud was quoted dun ng the
campaign saying that Ivancie was an S 0 B .he didn't
deny 1,, even though the quote was supposed to be off the
record His defense was "It's tru e'~ ) The point i s , hat
when no one who is supposed ,0 be a leader w ill lead,
then those who are supposed to be followers, or are
supposed ,0 ge, out of the way. must lead
And when you have done your best, as Bud did for
oight yoors. you must then get out of the way and let
others t r y And even though leading is tough, (Bud was
condemned for everything from his language to his
beard), you can make a difference, which possibly no
one but you could make ( Bud took the c ity budge, from
a very dangerous point into wha, is now one 0, the most
fisca lly responsible c ity gover nment budgets in the
country Being a small businessman, he, unlike a lot of
politicians who have never me, a p ayroll, knew that
you no, only can , operate w ith a deficit, bu, you also
have to have a rainyday fund, jus, in case everything
goes w ro n g ) This is no, only the opportunity offered
by democracy, it is the responsibility we all must
f u lf ill in a democracy
We here on the Edge hope this paper does a ll three of
these We attempt to lead our readprs toward a b e tte r.
safer, more thoughtful viewpoint We follow and
support leaders in politics, business, and the arts who
have new ideas for solutions to our old problems And
we also attempt to stay out of the way, by not getting in
between people We find that too many papers and
other media do more harm than good when they tell
3,or tes about personal tragedies like murders and
rapes and g lo rify the violence, often increasing the
pain of the victim s w eat the Edge believe there is
more than enough information about who died, and how,
and not nearly enough about who is tru ly livtnQ. and
why
So, we suggest that our headline be a New Year s
resolution for us all

Dear Editor
I was dr iving home ,0 Tolovana Park from
Seaside about 3 30 in the morning I passed a
Cannon Beech petrol near the second ext, going
the opposite direction They whipped around
and began their "ho, p ursuit" B y th e tim e l
neared the end of the th ird exit, the white jeep
was r ight on my back bumper I though, to
myself, Man, they must have done 90 mph to
catch me so fas,1’ Sure enough, the crazy
lights came on and 1 was pulled over The
officer said my license plate light was not
working 1 had just checked all of my lights
before leaving Seaside I strolled ,0 the rear of
my vehicle arid looked for myself I, was
wor k ing just fine I climbed back into the
d rive r s sea, The officer w ith the round face
tame up and said he smelled alcohol and asked if
1 had been dr inking I said no He asked me
again I said no He walked away The other
officer came up and said he smelled achohol and
asked where I had been He showed me d ir, on
his finger and satd the d irt had come from my
license plate Ugh, lens 1 wen, back and wiped
all the d ir, from the lens
We passed each
other at roughly 55 mph at night in the ra in 1
I can under stand perhaps being followed for
a short way a, 3 30 am,
I understand there
is a Io, of money ,0 be made by issuing drunk
dr iver tickets For various reasons
this
issue is getting tiresome There are people ou,
there toting guns and speeding and order ing me
off the road And they have badges1 I am pu, off
by this type of behavior from our public
servants I am w ritin g this as a citizen 3 alert
to our small town police state
