Anyway, this is another worthy

One more community ne’ e ano then
we can move on Recycling""" your
beloved editor got ¡uCky this month
and was given tne p r iv ile g e of beinq
Recycling volunteer fo-ordm ator
for July The Co-or dinar or signs up
folks to serve one hour a year to
help at the recvclmg center The fun
w is that folks Mom all walks of
life m our community were happy to
spend an hour (some many more) to
xeep our Recycling program one of
best m the country for ’ he size of
the community
Tne Cannon Beach Recvclmg
proqram is one of tne true
'Community projects in town it
began ov<“r 15 years ago. and in spite
of Bureaucratic indifference,
p o litic a l manipulation. Budget
attacks, union abandonment and
bus mess disdain, it has survived ano
prospered, thanks m large measure
lately, to the stead hand and clear
nead of John Rippev, and a nost of
folks wno demand the best for tne
community
We at this ; aper believe that the
C annon Beach Recycling program
should not only be given tne fu ll
support of the people in the
communn.y but of the City
Government ano the City Manager
we believe that educ at mg the
public both local, and our guest
from around the world, about
Recycling in general and our system
in particular should be one of our
top p r io r itie s and w** urge others to
pass this message on to the p >wers
that be we believe that it is
important to inform our v isito rs
about the pottle b ill for example, so
they don t toss aluminum cans in
w ith the trash, our curbside
program, so they can participate
while they v is it, and maybe ta ie
this inform ation home to their own
communities We should encourage
folks to take a walk down by the
’agoons and see What people can do
sometimes in spite of the lack of
commitment by their Government
The people of Cannon Beach
started this program years before
any of our current o ffic e holders
were elected or hired, and tne
people have had to fight every step
of the way. w*»ll, folks another one
is needed w'e need to quit hiding
our light under a bushel or a
cardboard box for that m atter, and
make education and information a
p rio rity in our future e ffo rts
For example we have to change
the idea that Recyr ling and Garbage
Collection are tne same thing The
la tte r is removing waste the
former is reclaim ing resources
Everyt ime you recycle a can you are
doing a lit t le consumer style
mining, you are a logger when you
bundle your newspapers and
cardboard, and w ith every aluminum
can you return for a refund, a salmon
has increased its chances to make it
to the ocean, where you are helping
our f ishermen
Bucky Fuller once said, Pollution
is just a resource we haven t found a
use for yet "
We have plenty of use and need
for recycled m aterials and need to
let our potential consumer loggers,
miners, and fishermen know how to
do the jobs we need done So, if the
City, County, or State would like to
join us at tne Edge, and the rest of
the community in volunteering in
these e ffo rts, they would f md us
also w illin g to support them u n til
then 1 guess the nafMe continues
