LIVE MUSIC!
One function of recorded
music is to replace the player's
part in the interaction of musi
cian and audience during a
musical performance. An Irish
setter could represent the
audience. There could be a
rehearsal for "listening to
music.” It wouldn't be the
same.
Despite our reluctance to
recognize human responses that
cannot be measured by instru
ments, one might concede that
a person’s response to music
played and sung by humans in
the very same room would be
different than the response to
reproductions of performances.
Like the Chinese farmer who
preferred drawing water by
hand, we prefer the enriching
human experience to being part
of a machine. We suggest
alternatives.
Attend, of course, live
musical performances in your
neck ol the woods, hear the
quality and variety flourish as
the audience nourishes the
music and is nourished in
return.
If you or your child has an
affection for blowing notes out
into the air, or making a string
vibrate by striking it. or pulling
on it with a bow, then, by all
means, do it. Choose the kind
of instrument according to how
much fun it is for you to make
notes come out of it.
Some fortunate people are
gifted with pleasant voices and
should not hesitate to sing.
Those not so fortunate might
hum quietly.
We are not suggesting that
you bum your records, tapes,
and C.D.s. Just remember,
they’re not the real thing.
Changes will come whether
we take responsibility for them
or not. It is the goal of the
I pper Left Edge to report these
changes and to attempt to
participate on the side of the
Arts and the Environment, in
the future of the planet. We
encourage our readers to do the
same.
Dr. Karkeys
Fundamentals. Those things
we share from generation to
generation, spanning seas,
languages, histories. The
things that give us continuity, a
sense of connectedness, without
which we are isolated and
adrift.
The trueness of the things
we value is in each of us, and is
meaningless until we separate
ourselves from the desires and
aspirations that others, often
those we love, or fear, may
project upon us. When we do
clear a path to our individual
self, our truth does ring, mean
ing and value are real, and we
find the foundation upon which
we can choose, change, and
create.
We are each unique, and our
first real work is to listen for
our inner voice, recognize it,
and listen to it. It is the founda
tion of the song of our life, a
song unlike any other, to be
sung with joy and affection.
