arb itratio n . W e have in this coun­
try a num ber of State Boards of
A rbitration which have the power
to say, and do say, to the employed:
“ Now do this or get out and let
other workmen take your places’ ;
and to the em ployer: “ Now do this!
or quit busines, unless you can get
other workmen on your term s.” j
Many business enterprises have
come to an end in one of these ways.
But under the compulsory idea,
the State Board would have the
power to say to the workmen :
“ Work at your present wages or go
to ja il”; and to the em ployer: “ Pay
higher wages and continue your
business or go to ja il.” I have not
seen the much vaunted New Zeal­
and law, but I will not believe it ¡8
com pulsory u ntil some proof is
offered 1
If I understand your editorial, it
means the public, the state, the m a­
jority? has a right to strip a citizen
of his n ataral and unalienable
rights, and th a t every citizen should
be p ro u d to “ obey the law w h ic h
the com m unity and therefore he
himself has m ade,”
