Evolution By Organization.

Man in his lowest estate is an

er degree of intelligence he forms
co-partnership and organizes asso
ciations of individuals in order to
have the co-operation of a larger
num ber for some specific purpose.
It is thus, th at in proportion as the
intelligence of the race increases,
the more general will be th e ten d
ency to associate and com bine. Or
in other words, the tendency is to
ward co-operation.
Persons representing all of these
tendencies are to be found in every
com m unity at all times. At the
bottom of the scale we have the
purely egoistic who prefer to stan d
alone w ithout any reference to o th
ers, never com bining with their fel
low’s for any purpose except in the
most in tim ate degree. Then a lit
tle higher in the iutellectual scale
men begin to associate th eir efforts
for a common purpose, and still
higher in the scale we find these
associations are more powerful and
com prehensive in th eir purposes.
In every association of this kind
for a common purpose, the ind iv id
ual member surrenders some por
tion of his egoism in exchange for
the benefits of co-operation.
This tendency to organize, to a s
sociate arid combine for a common
purpose is alw ays an indication of
a quickening of the intellectual fac
ulties, and as we go higher in the
scale, this tendency will be propor
tionately accelerated am ong the
people u n til it includes the entire
mass for the benefit of every
individual. This, when complete,
will be A ltruism , which is our next
step in progress. It is to this grand
culm ination th a t this tendency to
com bine is pointing. One class of
people organize and associate their
efforts to secure some advantage for
them selves and to the extent th a t it
is successful, other classes are com
pelled to combine for their own pro
tection.— [From E q u ity .
