T H E TORCH OF REASON, S IL V E R T O N , OREGON , AUG UST 30, E. M. 300 (1900.) to corns; and today it looks as though the dream of peace would be shattered for years and gory battlefields would in carn ad in e the civic strongholds of C hristendom . In such tim es there is but one re course for the lovers of peace. They m ust send round the globe the ceaseless cu rren t of peaceful thoughts, exalting the glory and em prise of the reign of peace and declaring everywhere, in valley and m ountain height, in school room and at the m erchant’s desk, in p a r liam ent and palace, in hum blest homes and most honored places, th a t only by the reign of peace are the true interests of h u m an ity con served, th a t war is a curse and though sometimes a seeming neces sity, never necessary if men are willing to be unselfish and live the larger life of love and brotherhood. B ut how unlikely are s u c h thoughts seriously en tertainad, even in w hat are known as the religious circles of society. H ere comes a bishop of the M ethodist C hurch, Earl Cranston, lately retu rn ed from a tour around the globe, who, be holding the coveted prize of the O rient for the greedy appetite of C hristianity, avows th a t a war by which H eathendom would be sub jected to the civilizing influences of C hristendom , i3 justified a t any cost, eith er of filthy lucre or the sacrifice of hu m an life. C h ristia n ity is dying a t home, therefore it m ust be strengthened and expanded abroad. If the clergy can arouse the enthusiasm of a crusade, it would be the m ost fortunate event in the m aterial growth of C hristen dom which has occurred since P eter the H erm it hurled all E urope ag ain st th e M oham m edan stro n g hold and sought to rescue the Holy City from the grasp of A hti-C hrist. No doubt every p u lpit in the land would thunder with “ p a trio tic ” outbursts, stirring th e m u ltitu d es to m artial fervor, if they discerned the possibility of evangelizing all Asia with a Bible satu rated with hum an gore and the prayers of a thousand cannon th u n d erin g at the gates of Pekin. T his is the mission of the gentle Jesus; th is the way “ C h ristian ” leaders since the days of C onstantine and C harlem agne have ever dissem inated the Bible and the tenets or C hristianity. Every letter and syllable of the Creed is m yriad-dyed in the blood of hum an sacrifices. The estab lished church, alas, craves war, yearns for it, for w ithout conquest she becomes m oribund and th re a t ens to offend th e nostrils of civili zation with the p u trid corpse of Ecclesiasticism . But there is a new day and a new religion. . . . Peace, peace everywhere, not the peace of c rim inal resignation, not the peace of wrong and injustice and error and despotism , not th e peace of a v a r icious power which sways its ty r annous sceptre over the weak and poor, not the peace of cowardice and fear, or of cringing sycophancy; but the peace of T ru th and R ight, and Justice and Love— let this peace be everyw here proclaim ed from hut to palace and work-bench to the thrones of reigning d y n a s ties— and ere long the forbidding clouds of horrid war will roll away and the Angel of Peace, blessing the world, will appear am id the glorified heavens, to enlighten, e n noble and uplift a terrified, dow n trodden and benighted age.— [The Independent T hinker. c obbler, stick to th y last! A shoem aker found fau lt w ith an oil-painted slipper in one of the paintings of a celebrated a rtist, but showed the greatest ignorance in criticising the other ‘parts of the p a in t ing. Hence has arisen the oft-quoted saying, Let the cobbler stick to his last, and let every one atten d to his own business.
