FOR S A L E BY
It is the sober second thought,
we are in the h a b it of saying,
which saves us, which takes the
helm and sheers us away from the
half-hidden reef in our first mad
course. I t is not. It is the sobtr
first thought which has redeem ed
us from destruction tim e after time,
the sober first th o u g h t of the few
who are tru ly educated, who have
looked below the surface of things
and considered the hidden and ob
scure results, who have weighed
the rig h t and wrong and stood im
movably for the right. I t is the
counsel of such men which has
given us courage and power to re
strain ourselves and face our h a rd
est d u ty .
Evidence of disease of the n a
tional conscience m ust raise in the
m inds of th o u g h tfu l men grave
doubts as to the sufficiency of our
education to “ insure ra tio n a l pro
gress, prosperity
and
honor,”
w hether because of in h eren t weak-
ness of the system or because of
the stren g th of the forces opposed
to it.
P robably th e most striking phe-
nomenon which we have witnessed
has been the trem endous display
of excited feeling. No m an can
doubt th a t the force of blind
passion has been in hundreds of
thousands of men the d o m in an t
force.
