Ju ly 20th is “ Donation Day” for
the Liberal U n iversity.
Prof. W akem an workn in the
garden by m oonlight these even
ings.
Quite a num ber of new students
have inform ed us of their intention
to be with us next term .
Mr. A. K au tz and fam ily arrived
in Silverton this week. Mr. K autz
will soon begin work on our build
ing again.
T here will be a “ Donation D ay'’
ball a t L iberal H all, F rid ay even
ing, Ju ly 20th, for the benefit of the
L. U. O. Everybody come.
A traction engine, a grading m a
chine, several men and some boys
worked two days on the bicycle
track this week, and have it in tine
shape.
Mr. C. N. Young of Scio, Oregon,
m ade us a very pleasant call S at
urday. He inform s us th a t his
cousin expects to atten d the Liberal
U niversity this year.
J u s t as we go to press, the m ail
brings us two good donations, to be
acknowledged on D onation Day,
Ju ly 20th. One comes from Ore
gon and the o th er from P ennsyl
vania. This is, indeed, encour
aging.
Mr. A. E. Mason, wife and two
children, from Tillam ook, Ore., are
visiting relatives and friends in
Silverton. Mr. Mason was for one
year a member of th e L. U. O.
facu lty , where he did good work
and will long be rem em bered by
the students.
Miss K ata M atteson, who has
been with us for some tim e as s tu
dent and lib rarian in the Liberal
University, departed for E astern
Oregon, W ednesday, where she
hopes to get a school for t he coming
w inter. \V e are sorry to have K a ta
go and hope to have her with us
again soon.
Gen. Wm. Birney, W ashington,
D. C., in sending a c o n trib u
tion for D onation D ay, Ju ly 20th,
says: “ F ig h t off the ‘G iant Des
p a ir:’ the money for th e building
will come in tim e to make your
grand enterprise a success.” Friende
of the L. U. O., let us see th a t this
prophecy comes true.
Mrs. M attie B arnhouse and Mr.
and and Mrs. L aughlin and ch ild
ren left for Salem , W ednesday, after
a few d ay s’ stay at the L. U. O.
T h e L aughlins will soon retu rn to
their home in E astern Oregon, but
we expect to see Mrs. B arnhouse
again in a week or so.
We enjoy
these pleasant visits from our
friends, as we like to have them
see w hat we are actually doing.
Letters from intending students
come from all p arts of the U nited
Spates, and there is prospect of a
large attendance. There will be no
trouble in getting students for the
L. U. O., and we hope the friends
of our institu tio n will help us to in
crease our facilities for teaching
and boarding, so th a t we can a c
com m odate enough students to pay
the ru n n in g expenses of the school.
D onation Day, Ju ly 20th, will be a
good tim e to th in k of this.
Miss Em ily W akem an was thrown
from her bicycle last T h u rsd ay and
suffers from a dislocation of the
right ankle and a fracture of tne
fibula. She is getting along nicely
and ventures about the house on
crutches.
T his is a very u n fo rtu
nate accident, as it deprives Miss
W akem an of much of the pleasure
she m ight have-enjoyed while visit
ing her parents and the m any
warm friends she has m ade in S il
verton.
A friend from M aine, in a p ri
vate letter, inform s us th at he is
going to give the L. U. O. five or
ten d ollars a year, and adds: “ I
also w ant to add som ething to the
Ingersoll C h air—a m ost excellent
suggestion and scheme. I like the
Torch of Reason and hope to be
able to subscribe to it as long
as I live.
I t seems th a t there
ought to be a large num ber who
could an n u ally give $5.00 to the
Liberal U niversity.”
T he New Life in th e New W orld.
Concluded from 6th page,
productive, In d u stria l Life. The
last three hundred years has ac
com plished more th an all of the
preceding ages. It was the incom
ing of the New E ra, the New W orld
th a t m ade all this possible. L iberty,
Science and H u m a n ity have done
it, not Theology. They gave us the
idea of progress, the evolution and
co n tin u ity of our race, and of its
ever-increasing Solidarity.
They
gave us the conception of T ru th , as
not a celestial R evelation, b u t the
agreem ent of our thoughts and con
cepts with the facts, processes and
laws of the world around us. All
of these never existed before, they
were the new results of the new

Well, w hat then rem ains? W hy,
the sad confession th a t the masses
of the hum an race know not th a t
these things have ever happened,
and have little or no participation
in the benefits resulting. As the
astonishing progress of m achinery
has done little to lessen the toil of
m an while it has increased th e pro
duction im m easureably, so those
other great leaps of progress have
been taken by and for a few’.

The Liberal U niversity is in great
need of funds, and as a “day of
p ra y er” would be behind the tim es,
we have concluded to appoint July
20, E. M. 300, as a Day of D onation.
We earnestly request every Lib
el al in America to send us a rem it
tance on th a t day, if it i9 no more
th an twenty-five cents. The name
and address of each donor, with the
am ount given, will be published in
the Torch of Reason. “ In uuion
