able for the sake of his miserable
company.
“Self-love and social are the
same.” So said Alexander Pope,
the poet-philosopher, and he sought
to show it by nature’s light, as he
argued that when one works for
another’s good, it is because it is a
pleasure to do so, otherwise no one
would ever take the trouble. The
theory of the actuality of disinter­
ested motives is a fallacy, from the
fact that there is no disconnection
of the realities concerned.
Errata.
Iu the sixth line of “The Oregon
Elysium”, in the Torch of March
17, the word “nobbis” is to be read
“noblis”—the noble fir. It is the
red or yellow fir, the most common
tree here, and comprises the bulk of
Western Oregon forests.
