W hile an elegant and beautiful
woman, made up of all the chief
constituents of true nobility, was
devoting her efforts to the securing
of funds for the preaching of the
holy religion to the heathen, asked
“ John R andolph of R oanoke’’ to
contribute. He beckoned the lady
to a window and said: “ M a d a m ,
here! The heathens at our door,”
poijiting to a p arty of half naked
negroes of her own belonging in her
own yard.
T hus it is we find around us
everywhere the heathen at our own
door.
The average A m erican has very
little idea as to how this heathen
fund, collected in this country and
in E ngland and sent over to h e a th ­
en lands, is spent, and as to who
gets the benefit of it, and lor telling
it, as I have seen it with my own
eves and know’ it with my own
knowledge, I have no doubt th at
m any who will read this article, as
well as many who will hear it read,
will rise up to say all m anner of
had things of and about me, and
m ay even intim ate th at I am not
as good a C hristian as was the
man who threw’ a button in the
m issionary collection box.
Now, let me have it my own way
and then you m ay have yours af­
terw ard in the say, but do not con­
demn me unless you find out by in ­
vestigation th a t I have told you
other than the tru th .
M any years ago—and today, too,
for it is over and over the same
thing ever since the game started —
an old dom inie had several boys
and girls, but no wealth or proper-
ty to endow them with, and he con­
cluded to m ake the heathen lands
a basis for his operations.
He commenced talk ing to his
parishioners about the poor h ea th ­
en and how they were dying and
languishing in ignorance and sin,
and finally going to hell for the
w ant of the holy C hristian religion
as was tau g h t them there at home.
A few eloquent talks brought in,
through the contribution box for
m issionary purposes, large sum» of
money, and through tire goodness
<»f souls, noble, pure, generous, un­
selfish,-the wealth kept rolling in,
and the dom inie’s children were all
well provided in different posts
scattered in different islands as
chiefs of the m issionary stations,
and the descendants of this dom i­
nie have all lavished in a wealth
th at kings and princes of the past
would envy.
“ They toil not, neither do they
spin,” but, like the lily of the field,
they are beautiful to behold when
they, like a bird of passage, come
to the land of their dom inie’s a n ­
cestry and tell of the great good
they are doing, when, in fact, they
are doing no good at all. They

tia n ity genuinely and truly, who t o

cruel,
heartless,
wicked hypocrisy practiced on the t o
people by the robed, gowned, cleric, t o
who alw ays passes the hat around
before he preaches, save and except t o
when he comes to preaching mis­ t o
sionary sermons, the expert and

drilled scholar in which can bring
tears from colder stones than dia t o
nionds and cash galore from every

purse, even from th a t of the miser,
when th a t preacher is through t o
painting pictures of suffering and
t o
depravity and the hell hound cer­
ta in ty of the poor heathen he may t o
be talk in g of and about, and lying
t o
about, in order to get m o n e y in
m any cases to spend in a bagnio t o
bungalow, telling his companions
t o
and associates, his equals and his
like, how he fooled th e guys at
home.
