The growth of liberality in relig-
ious thought is illustrated by the
fact that no one dreams of fabricat
ing such slanders about the death
of Ingersoll as long passed current
in regard to Hume and Paine. The
circumstances of Colonel Ingersoll’s
death are, of course, too well known
to give an opening to calumny, but
the truth in regard to Hume and
Paine was quite accessible, if their
libelers had taken the pains to in
vestigate. There seems to have
been evolved within a century a
conscience against lying as a relig
ious duty. — [Springfield Repub
