THE TORCH OF REASON, SILVERTON, OREGON, AUGUST 24. 1899. of the Winds. Oue hundred feet above towers the limestone dome, while fifty feet away pours the Luna .Fall. The irresistible force of the waters is here realized. Crossing the cavern 150 feet, you ascend the flight of stairs which bring« you out to your starting point on the narrow shelf. You have entirely encircled the column of water which thunders past you. After I had seen this, I decided that I had seen Niagara Falls, and made short visits to the Three Sis ters and Little Brother Islands, and then back to the town, where I again met my friend Mr. Level, to whom I am indebted for much of my delightful trip. There is still more to see at Niagara, but I had seen the whirlpool and rapids from the Suspension Bridge two months before, and as it was getting late I decided to return to Buffalo. A fire in the power house stopped the electric cars so I had to wait for a train, w’hich did not get me to Buffalo until nine o’clock. My good friends the Wetmores were about deciding that I had been lost, and Mrs. W. was thinking of or ganizing a search party, while her husband, tired by his day’s work, had retired for the night, and was indulging in horrible dreams about me going over the Falls and not being able to climb back. My re turn put a stop to all this, and we were all happily united again after my day’s visit to the grandest sight in the world. A Good Idea. E ditor T o r c h ok R eason : We were so well pleased with Mr. Geer’s jocose description of his visit here, that we want to distribute a few copies of the July 20th Torch among our friends. It will interest them more than my own writings, and they will probably read some thing else in the paper afterwards, and thus some unexpected new idea may get caught in their brain. So please send me 25 cents worth of the July 20th Torch. We enjoyed Mr. Geer’s visit im- menselv, and hope some other bright, likely Freethinker may sometime hunt us up. He gave me a better idea of the Liberal Uni versity, as to what respects it will differ from other schools, and how its moral lessons in place of the Bible readings have already result ed beneficially. We need more on thege points in the Torch, to awak en people to the practical needs which other schools do not supply, and how you intend to supply them. Whether the Liberal University will win plenty of friends and sup port, depends on their understand ing you. and having confidence in your ability to teach what is needed. Everybody has been taught the common school way, and don’t see that any changes are needed ex cept to drop the Bible. But if I understand Mr. Geer aright, you in- We did tend to teach instead something more beneficial. Some one came while he was explaining it, and I did not learn as much as I wanted to.
