A few’ days ago in Paterson, N.
J., says “Electricity”, the X-ray
was probably the means of saving
the life of a fifteen-months-old |
child who had swallowed a nickel
which had lodged in its throat.
The X-ray picture showed the ex
act location of the coin and enabled
the delicate and dangerous opera
tion kuown afi esophagotomy to be
safely performed.
PAPER
Buffalo, N. Y., is now trying an
automobile wagon for the collection
of mail. The mail from forty box
es, covering a territory six miles in
length, was collected in less than
half the time necessary to cover the
same route with a horse and wag-
ofl. The experiment will be contin
ued, and if it continues to work
satisfactorily it is believed that a
number of automobiles will be
placed in regular commission in
connection with the postal service
in that and other cities.

An English inventor has built an
experimental railway in Belgium
over which he has run cars around
sharp curves at a speed of 150 miles
per hour. A practical commercial
line is to be constructed between
Liverpool and Manchester, Eng
land, The roadway is A-shaped,
with a single track, and the car is
a “double decker, 60 feet long, and
hangs one-half on each side of the
A-shaped trestle. The motive pow
er is electricity, and the car carries
four motors weighing three tons
each. The cost of construction is es
timated at $50,000 to 8100,000 per
mile, but the smaller cost of opera
tion is expected to reduce the total
cost below that of the steam rail
way.
