B utt, Sr., a Spiritualist, a t t h e Hebo school house. Mr. B utt is an ex-m inister and knows the Bible “ by h e a rt”. There are five poiuts of contro versy, as follows: 1. The holy scripture as given in Hebrew and Greek is t h e infallible word of God. 2. Man is a fallen being and in himself to tally depraved. 3. The only redem ption for fal len man is through th e atonem ent made by God through Jesus C hrist. 4. The dead will be resurrected and appear before C hrist, an d the wicked will go into eternal p u n ish ment and the ju st into eternal jov. 5. The devil is a personal being. I shall atten d an d report to the Torch readers the result as near as may be. I have heard Mr. Blalock. He is quite Liberal for a B aptist m inister. I am w ithin two miles of the mighty Pacific. The ro ar of its thunderous waves are heard during school hours. As the irresistible force of its m ountain billows rush in against the rocks, the ja r of the ground m ay be felt. The rock is the headland of Cape K aiw anda and rises perpendicularly on three sides to a height of a thousand feet or more. W h a t a sight in a storm! I am here a t a tim e to observe the combined effect of equinoctial storms and spring tides. S tan d in g behind a cluster of spruce trees th a t are half buried by the drifting white sand, real sheets of w ater are torn from the breakers and hurled upon us a t a distance of nearly a mile. B ut nothing short of a rock- sm ashing tornado could drive me from my point of observation on the hill. At times when l a m told th at some one made the ocean, I a l most believe it; but when told th a t some one m ade it “be still' real quick in a storm , I ca n ’t believe it at all. The valley of the Nestucca and its trib u taries will be one of the richest dairy districts in the w orld. The clim atic conditions are perfect in every respect. W ith the thous ands of acres of meadow and pas ture lands aud the healthful con ditions lor cattle, there is a near and bright future for this section. Some experim ents have been made in the sugar beet in d u stry . The analysis a t C orvallis shows 94 per cent, of juice to 100 pounds of beets; and of the whole hundred pounds 19 per cent, is real sugar. The beets were grown on the farm of G. M. L andingham .
