T H E TORCH OF REASON, SIL V E R T O N , O REG O N , T H U R SD A Y , NOV EM BER 17, 1898. N ational Convention. To the Secularists, F ree th in k ersan d Lovers of L iberty in America: The A nnual Congress of the A m erican Secular U nion and Free- th o u g h t Federation will be held at W ashington H all, 70 E. A dam s St., in th e city of Chicago, 111., Novem ber 18, 19 and 20. The object of this Congress is to tran sa ct the reg u lar business of th is association, to devise p lan s for b etter organization and for the prosecutian of its work d u rin g the coming year, to advo cate the com plete secularization of our governm ent, to dissem inate a knowledge of th e principles of Free- tho u g h t, and to enable L iberals to become better acquainted w ith each other an d to unite them in a closer fellowship. The purposes for which th is association was organized were never m ore pressing. Its work must, be both defensive and aggress ive. W e m ust defend our in s titu tions ag ain st the a ttack s th a t will undoubtedly be m ade upon them by the theocratic N ational Reform Association and its allies. We m ust prosecute with increased energy our fight ag ain st the exem ption of ch u rch p roperty from ta x a tio n , the em ploym ent of ch ap lain s, religious in stru ctio n and cerem onies in our public schools, Sunday laws, relig ious tests and proclam ations, ap p ro p riatio n s to sectarian in s titu tions, donations of governm ent land for Rom an chapels and donations of governm ent money to M ethodist Book Concerns. As a result of our war with Spain it is probable th a t Cuba, Porto Rica and the P hillippines w ill be come a p a rt, or be un d er the pro tectorate, of our republic. If so, we m ust dem and th a t in providing for th eir governm ent the widest relig ious liberty be secured for th eir in h ab itan ts, and th a t no p artiality be shown to any church. To accom plish these purposes Liberals m ust unite and co-operate for their own protection and the extension of in telligence, F reethought and liberty. W e therefore urge Liberal thinkers everyw here to atten d and to con- trib u te to this Congress. We shall strive to m ake the session» in te r esting and profitable to them . Able speakers will address them , in sp ir ing music will be rendered, and fratern ity and good cheer w ill abound. F u n d s are needed to defray the e x p e n d s of the Congress and carry on the work of the society. Its use fulness ha*« been im paired in the past bv a lack of funds. This should not be allowed.
