E ditor T orch of R eason :
I read in the Liter rv Digest of
Sept. 24, 1899, “ Revision of the
C atholic index of prohibited hooks.”
W hy does Rome prohibit any
hooks at all? Is her doctrine not
based upon good common sense and
reason? W hy does she not teach
her children two things — to know
the true m eaning of right and
wrong? Let them learn th a t les
son well, and I w arrant you and
the whole Catholic church th a t
they m ay read every hook prohibit
ed and they will receive all the
good (if any) in such books and
sim ply pass the bad by. But, my
dear readers, this is not the object
of the C atholic church. She very
well knows of her despotism ; she
very well knows she m ust keep her
children in ignorance in order th a t
her prelates may live high on the
fat of the land. The church fears
th a t these books contain a great
deal of tru th and m ay open the
door to readers of good judgm ent
to the fact th a t they are misled. If
the ch u rch ’s doctrine is good and it
teaches the laity to know right
from wrong, aU the books in the
world would not affect their moral
principles, except to m ake them
better men and women. Give the
F reeth in k in g and L iberal men and
women any and all books ever
published in the w orld, and they will
sim ply abstract the good and cast
aw ay the bad, as it is n atu ra l for
m an to be good.
