T H E TORCH OF REASON, SILV ER TO N , OREGON, T H U R SD A Y , OCTOBER will do right w ithout being forced to, and no punishm ents will be nec essary when no violations of others rights are known, but even when men are m uch more perfect than they are now they will be obliged to decide on rules of action so as to work in harm ony in carrying on the great work o f a civilized people; and these rules will be the laws. We cannot even then say th a t every m an “ is a law unto him self” for although all m ay agree to the laws and all work in harm ony yet every m an will be helping to m ake laws for others and obeying laws th at others have helped m ake and of course will not be “ a law unto him self.’’ Secularism and civilization will increase; anarchy and b arb ar ism, like the m am m oth and m asto don will only be found in the fos- siliferous rocks of hum an history. both the professors and students will do all in their power to m ake their coming both l>eneheial and pleasant. H oping to meet m any new students, as well as the ol<1 ones, and become acquainted with them , I am yours truly, Silverton, Ore. L ouie R auch . i attended the Liberal U niversity la8i year and will attend again this year. It has been a success in every way. Everyone who can should attend and. help it along. It is a grand undertaking, and those who have so kindly given their as sistance will be rewarded by seeing m any young men aud women help ed to an education th a t will be c a r ried out on a broad and liberal plan, which will be of far more value to them than such as is received from sectarian institutions. Some of our friends th in k that our editorials are •‘m eant for them ,” but we very seldom indulge in per sonalities, and never unless in self- defense. In speaking of certain facts with which we are acquainted we only Jo so in order to illustrate some principle, aud not to h u rt anyone’s feelings. We believe th a t there is no one in the whole world who can overlook the faults of others easier th an we can, for we are thoroughly convinced th a t the old free m oral agency idea is a hum bug, and th a t we are all what our inherited tendencies and our environm ents make us; but a t the same time we believe th a t all should try to make our surroundings the best we can, and w hen we w rite ed itorials this is what we are trying to do. If we m ake m istakes, and those who read are hurt in anyw ay, they m ust try to overlook our sh o rt comings, as they expect us to over look theirs. Secularists should be as a family of intelligent brothers and sisters, helping one another to correct th eir faults and living as happy, useful lives as possible. 14, 1897. * God and the G overnm ent. * A governm ental recognition of God m eans a recognition of him by Price, Ten cen ts. the force of the pains and penalties which the governm ent has at its com m and for the execution of its purposes.
