When reaso n ’s lig h t so clear an d b right
Was sunk in s u p e rs titio n ’s nig h t,
And som bre clouds of d a rk e st hue
Spread th ick ly o’er th e sky so blue.
Oh, th en it was th a t hum an life
Became a victim to th e bloody strife ;
wf bigots in th e ir zealous ways
Offering up to God th e ir praise.
X
The pages of h isto ry testify
How m any m a rty rs learned to d ie :
Yea, die for know ledge, tru th and light,
That we m ight tread these p ath s so bright.
But in perusing th is d a rk page,
The history of a cruel age,
Our eyes a t last are open wide
To all th e horrors h ere descried.
When B runo w ith his tru th an d lig h t,
And P a n th e ism ’s story b rig h t,
Was to th e stak e com pelled to go,
And then condem ed to hell below,
We do not h e a r him cry in fright
Like C h rist in cru cifix io n ’s n ig h t,
But, like a p h ilosopher tru e and brave,
Went calm ly to a m a rty r’s grave.
Three h u n d red years have onw ard sped,
T hroughout w hich Science lig h t h a th
shed;
And over B ru n o ’s honored grave
I itne rolls h e r soothing peaceful w ave.
His costly satu e m ark s th e spot
W here love and m ercy were forgot,
And stan d s a m enace to th e Pope,
But to th e world a sh aft of hope.
So w hile th e ages onw ard s p e e d ,
W ith Science to supply our need,
Our th o u g h ts will tu rn to ages past,
And give to B runo th a n k s a t last.
