SIUSLAW FALOT S E M I-W E E K L Y S. VOL. IL FLORENCE, OREGON, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1914 CANNE® , NOW GOOD RUN ON & Tiffing V lachm eT sN ow m and Will "Greatly Increase Output * -, Preparation Is Sanitary. The fishermen have been mak ing fairly good catches this week beginning w ith Tuesday when 1600 were turned in. Wednes day was better w ith an increase of 100 or a total o f 1700 fish. Thursday the catch was material ly larger and the count reached over 2600. Friday, resulted in another increase when the count amounted to 2000. From the time the fish pass a ■an who springs a counter as each one iw tossed by until they reach the retort, it is interesting to watch the process of preparing them fo r the market. First the heads, fins, tails are cut off an d , they are opened, then thrown into a vat of water. Taken from this vat they are thoroughly eleansed and washed under a pipe of running water. They are then placed on a table and with one stroke out by cir cular knives into chunks. N ext these chunks are split lenght- wise of the fish and are ready to go in the cans. .Under the hand packing sys tem one chinaman w ill fill 80 to 100 cases in a day, each case con taining 48 cans, making between 4000 and 5000 cans. This week a filling machine has been in stalled, and Thursday it was in wprlung order, but was only used at h alf speed, Its full capacity being 65 cans per minute, a little better than 1 can per second. This would give about 3900 cans in an hour, and produce in a days work of 10 hours something like 39000 cans or 1660 cases i f kept to its full speed. By hand the present crew used could fill about 4250 cases. Rolling from the filling machine they are inspected and placed in an endless carrier which takes the filled cans through a steam box which extracts the cold air, before they reach the capper. A fte r leaving _ the capping machine they pass through a spraying box which washes the outside o f the can. Then the cans are placed on trays and tested in a vat for leaks, and passed on to the retorts. I t takes only a few minutes for a fish after going into the filling machine to pass in a almost con tinuous forward movement to reach the re to rt The process of taking care of the fish is very clean and watch ing the operations will convince anyone that Wm. Kyle & Sons canned salmon put on the market w ith up-to-date and sanitary con ditions prevailing. The bill now goes to the House, ' where it is expected to precipitate another vigorous fight. When the commerce com mittee, under the Senate’s in structions, brought in the substi tute today no show of opposition was offered and the measure passed without a record vote. Senator Chamberlain, who is likely to be made a member of the conference committee, sees no hope of getting more than a $20,000,000 bill through a t this session.
