^People in many states are interested in the
wèstern part o f Lane county and the whole
coast country that is to be opened by the Will
am ette Pacific Railway which is Mlilding from
Eugene to Coos Bay. Especially are hundreds
o f people o f our own state looking forward to the
tim e when they can come to the Siuslaw country
by train. This desire is expressed on all sides, _
by people fro inali parts o f Oregon and the North
weak whenever1 they m eet residents Of this sec
tion. Most of these people are coming with a de
sire to invest or locate. This means the advance
m ent and development o f our towns and com
munities. This is what is wanted. This is what
is necessary.
*
A large number o f the residents o f the Sius
law are its pioneers. They have waited a long
time. Years ago railroads were built on paper
to -th is valley, but never materialized.
Now
a road bed is. completed from Eugene to
Mapleton, bridge piers built, steel bridges, rails
and building material at Eugene to be rushed in
when the laying o f rails commences.
.
The pioneers who identified them selves with
thia country are deserving o f great praise for
the work o f development they have taken part
in, but the job is not finished, it will never be
finished. Communities like human beings must
advance, and grow, or deteriorate and disappear.
! Newcomers are necessary to growth be
cause they bring additional capital and energy.
Few communities have been established and
existed as towns and business-centers, without
their pioneers having had just as high ideals o f
progress as any who come later, but the task o f
development becomes greater and must have
mere people and more capital back o f it each
year.
A town should do something each year to ad
