Girls Bruins show strong defense

With two losses to start
out the season for Columbia
High’s boys varsity basketball
program, Bruins head coach
Ryan Webb said turnovers
and offensive rebounds were
two key factors in Thursday
night’s loss to the Seton
Catholic Cougars.
While the Bruins were
able to fend off visiting Seton
Catholic for the first half,
making for a close game by
halftime, the Cougars capi-
talized on forced turnovers
and offensive rebounds, put-
ting them in the lead early in
the second half.
The Cougars walked away
victorious after four quarters,
with a score of 63-47 against
the Bruins.
It wasn’t all bad news for
the Bruins, though. As the
scrappy young team held on
to a tight game, major de-
fensive plays kept the Bruins
within fighting distance for
much of the game.

20 points, going 10 for 15 on
shooting attempts.

Knights was not “indicative
of how we actually played.”
For most of the game, the
score stayed within reach,
with the Bruins straying
only six to eight points
behind the taller visiting
team. And Kreps said he
was impressed with how the
girls played defensively.
“I think for the most part,
we were still in the game,”
Kreps said. “I like our effort
defensively, but we have to
improve on blocking out.”
Kreps also said the team
was out of gas by the final
few minutes of the game,
but for the shortened sea-
son, much of what the team
will be working on down the
road will be trying to figure
out the team’s playing habits
and adjusting accordingly.
“I think the whole team
is playing hard, we’re going
over certain things because
it’s kind of a new group,”
Kreps said.

School 7 p.m. on Tuesday,
after press deadline this
week. The Bruins are also set
to play against Goldendale
at home, 7 p.m. Thursday
May 13.

keeping the energy through
the entire game and working
on the shots that should be
made each time.
“As a team when we play
well it’s a team effort, and it’s
a team effort even when we
don’t play well,” Kreps said.
