The Dalles, Hood River hook up in Redmond
report
■ Staff
Columbia Gorge News
Gorge rivals The Dalles
and Hood River Valley got
their first look at each other
this track and field season on
April 21, when they con-
verged on Redmond for a
three-way meet with the host
Panthers.
The Dalles won the boys
meet 59.5 to 55.5 over
Redmond, while HRV
was third with 40 points.
Redmond, The Dalles and
HRV finished in that order
points-wise in the girls com-
petition. It was Hood River’s
first meet this spring, and the
second for The Dalles.
Notable meet highlights
included the 100-meter win
by The Dalles junior sprinter
Jaxon Pullen. He spent the
past few months running the
fly sweep for the Riverhawk
football team, but simply
had to go straight ahead
Wednesday — en route to
a personal best of 11.34
seconds (which leads the
IMC early in the season).
Pullen also ran a leg on the
Riverhawk first place 4 x 100
relay (46.45 seconds).
HRV senior Michael
Goodman — who lost a
competitive high jump by
one inch to Redmond’s
Nathan Wachs — cleared a
personal-best 6-foot-1 in the
process. That was a five-inch
PR from his sophomore year.
Goodman also added almost
a foot to his javelin best with
his 158-7, first-place throw.
HRV senior Josh Haynes
and The Dalles sophomore
Juan Diego Contreras en-
gaged in a two-race distance
duel. Contreras won the 1500
meters 4:08.37 to 4:16.02,
but Haynes responded later
in the meet to take the 800,
2:02.93 to 2:04.10. Both of
Contreras’ times were per-
sonal bests. The 1500 and 800
(both boys and girls) looked
like reunions of the recent
IMC district cross country
meet, as the top eight fin-
ishers dipped under 4:43 in
the race. The state’s distance
runners are clearly in race
shape, having benefited
from the back-to-back cross
country and track and field
seasons. Eight of the top 10
boys finishers registered per-
sonal bests, including HRV’s
Elliot Hawley who was third
in each race (2:08.24/800 and
4:21.0/1500).
Other boys winners includ-
ed The Dalles junior Taylor
Morehouse in the pole vault
at 11-6 and HRV sophomore
Shaw Burns, who leapt 19-7
in the long jump.
In the girls meet, Emily
Adams of The Dalles had
a busy day, winning the
100 (13.26) and long jump,
finishing second in the 200 by
a tenth of a second and run-
ning a leg on the Riverhawks’
second-place short relay.
Adams edged teammate Zoe
Dunn in a good long jump
competition, 16-8.25 to 16-7.
In a similar close finish,
The Dalles senior Hannah
Ziegenhagen edged HRV
sophomore Phoebe Wood
2:39.96 to 2:40.24 in the 800.
Ziegenhagen tuned up for the
race with an open 400, then
cooled down with a leg on
the Riverhawk 4 X 400 relay at
the end of the meet.
Recent IMC cross country
champion Chloe Bullock
did some speed work at
Redmond, winning the 1500
in a personal best 5:09.0
and then rested for some 20
minutes before running a
PR 64.97-second 400 to win
the one-lap race. Teammate
Poppy Miller, the defending
Class 5A state champion,
cleared 10-feet to win the
pole vault.
high jump at 4-10, the 100 in
13.62 seconds and anchored
the Rangers’ first place 4
x 100 relay (58.42). Junior
teammate Ashley Bailey also
was a double winner — in the
shot put (29-3) and discus
(80-0). Horizon senior Grace
Schreiber won the high
hurdles (18.88), lows (55.25)
and anchored the Hawks’
winning 4 x 400 relay.
On the boys side, Horizon
won easily with 164 points.
The Hawks had two double
winners in Josiah Sohal
(with personal bests in the
1500 and 800) and senior JJ
Holste, who won the high
jump at 5-6, and long jump
at 18-2.5 — each a person-
al best. Dufur sophomore
Marshal McLaughlin swept
the sprints. Also of note was
Horizon junior Josh Rogers’
38-10 triple jump win.

Stock and Shana Orellano

in the 1500 in 4:30.22 and
800 in 2:06.4, easily the best
marks in the Big Sky so far
this spring, and capped his
day with a leg on the third
place 4 x 400 relay. Stock and
Orellano finished 1-2 in the
800 and 1500, registering the
