Hood River Valley High School
Project Graduation seeks
funds for special sendoff
Trisha Walker
■ By Columbia
Gorge News
Hood River Valley High
School Project Graduation
volunteers are looking to
give graduating seniors a big
sendoff.
“This class has had the
hardest senior year in recent
history,” said parent Megan
Spears. “They missed the
last half of their junior year,
which is typically spent pre-
paring for senior year.”
There’s also been no way
to participate in the usual
school activities, such as
homecoming, sports events
or prom, and the traditional
Elks all-night party gradua-
tion night has likewise been
canceled due to COVID.
Parents are focusing their
efforts to provide a small-
er, safe and special event
to celebrate seniors, said
Spears, and are looking for
community support. Funds
raised will help provide what
volunteers hope is a fun
event with meaningful gifts
“to express that we care and
celebrate this graduating
class,” said a press release.
Prizes are being collected in
addition to monetary funds.
HRVHS Activities Director
Lindsy Weseman said staff
is looking into three options
for graduation itself and
hopes to have a decision by
the first week of May.
More information and a
donation link — as well as
individual stories on this
year’s graduating class —

OWA announces scholarship
for Oregon students
The Columbia Gorge chapter of Oregon
Women for Agriculture (OWA) has an-
nounced its annual $500 scholarship for
high school students. Scholarship forms are
available from local high school guidance
counselors or by emailing columbiagorge-
owa@gmail.com.
The student must be or have been a
resident of Hood River, Wasco, Sherman
or Gilliam counties a minimum of two
years during their high school education.
Preference goes to a student with a 3.0 GPA
or higher, pursuing a major in agricultural
studies, and female.
Applications must be postmarked no later
than May 1 of the given year.
Money is expected to be used for tui-
tion and/or books, and will be disbursed
to the student’s school following proof of
enrollment. Scholarship may be used for an
accredited school outside of Oregon.
•••
Oregon Women for Agriculture was orga-
nized 50 years ago by Willamette Valley farm
women who were concerned with regulatory
issues impacting the grass seed industry.
Since that time, this all-volunteer group has
broadened its scope to include nearly all
facets of agriculture and areas of our state.
The group’s mission is “Working Together
To Communicate The Story Of Today’s
Agriculture.” The Columbia Gorge chapter
currently has 16 members and focuses on
promoting agriculture through sponsor-
ships of local agricultural events, displays at
county fairs, placing crop identification signs
along major highways and roads, awarding
a scholarship to a high school senior who
intends to major in agriculture, and spon-
soring a local teacher to attend Oregon State
University’s Summer Agriculture Institute.
