HR man dies in crash
near Parkdale
Lyle Halverson of Hood
River died in a collision near
Parkdale on Oct. 16.
At approximately 8 p.m., a
Hood River County Sheriff’s
Office Sergeant attempted to
contact a Suzuki motorcycle
southbound on Baseline
Road for a traffic violation.
The motorcyclist accelerated,
turned northbound onto Toll
Bridge Road and eluded the
sergeant.
The sergeant, approxi-
mately one minute after the
attempted initial contact,
came upon the motorcycle
crashed on Toll Bridge Road,
south of the intersection of
Highway 35, according to a
press release from Oregon
State Police.
OSP and emergency per-
sonnel responded.
OSP is investigating the
crash and preliminary
investigation revealed that
the Suzuki, operated by
Halverson, 34, was north-
bound on Toll Bridge Road
at a high rate of speed when
he failed to negotiate a
right hand corner, entered
the southbound lane and
crashed into a Ford F-150
pickup operated by Guy
Wertgen, 53, of Parkdale,
according to OSP.
Halverson sustained fatal
injuries and was pronounced
deceased. Wertgen was not
injured. OSP was assisted by
Parkdale Fire and Rescue.
Fill Your Pantry returns
Fill Your Pantry is back for
its sixth year on Nov. 8, with
far less of the face-to-face
communal aspect to the fall
tradition, but with just as
much of the bounty.
Fill Your Pantry, at
Rockford Grange on Barrett
Drive southwest of Hood
River, provides Gorge resi-
dents with a chance to cele-
brate the harvest and stock
up on storable food products
grown by local farmers.
Whether your view of
Halloween is focused on the
colorful haunts of fall, above,
or the macabre and even gro-
tesque, you will find them both
at the corner of E. 10th and
Mt. Hood streets in The Dalles,
where competing views of the
holiday are in extravagant ev-
idence. Although many com-
munity Halloween events have
been canceled, the holiday spir-
its remain in evidence through-
out the Columbia River Gorge.
Be it beans, bratwurst,
broccoli, Bosc pears or black-
berry honey, the same range
of goods will be available.
Buyers can shop in bulk
for locally grown produce,
meats, grains, cheeses, herbs,
mushrooms, and more — all
while supporting local food
businesses and the grange.
This year’s market will look
a bit different as organizers
worked to find a format that
can still safely connect the
local community with the
abundance of locally grown
products. The market will be
only through online pre-or-
ders, through Nov. 1. Pickup
will be Nov. 8, noon to 4 p.m.
at the Rockford lot.

City still taking applications for new
Sidewalk Rehabilitation Pilot Program
City of the Dalles is still
taking applications for a pilot
program to rehabilitate dete-
riorated sidewalks.
Property owners in the city
are responsible for keep-
ing sidewalks next to their
properties in good repair and
a safe condition. The 50/50
Sidewalk Rehabilitation Pilot
Program will provide finan-
cial assistance to property
owners to meet that respon-
sibility, according to a press
release from the department
of public works.
The city is consider-
ing applications for the
rehabilitation or replacement
of existing sidewalks. The
pilot program will focus on
sidewalks located in resi-
dential areas. Applicants for
this program must be the
property owner.
A City of The Dalles con-
tractor will work within city
engineering and Americans
with Disabilities Act stan-
dards. The city will make all
arrangements for design,
construction, permits and
traffic controls. The contrac-
tor will be selected through a
competitive bidding pro-
cess. Work is expected to be
completed by June 30, 2021.
The city will accept
applications until Nov. 18.
Applications will then be pri-
oritized to provide the great-
est benefit to the community
within the limited funding
available. The homeowner
must pay half the cost before
the project can be scheduled.
Homeowners can down-
load an application from the
City website at thedalles.

without access to the internet
can call 541-296-5401 and
request a paper copy.
